China's defense minister Wei Fenghe has warned that any attempt to bring about Taiwan's independence will trigger a fight to the end. He spoke at a regional security forum in Singapore. General Wei accused the United States of pursuing an Indo-Pacific strategy bound to lead to confrontation. He said China's relationship with the US was at a 'critical juncture', and that it was up to Washington to improve ties.

If not, then they're independent.

Lazy China should have done SOMETHING in the 75 years since Formosa ( Tiawan ) shook off Japan's WW2 occupation. Time marches on. Taiwan has evolved into a dynamic democratic nation with it's own ideas and future. Hands off. Maintain the status quo and don't wock the boat.

Generally, the more dictators complain, the better choices that you are making.

All we are getting is China position, US position. Can we interview some Taiwanese people? I am sure Taiwanese has something to say about this.

This is one more reason why we need to send more help to Ukraine and end the war in Europe. To show China we are serious and they should stop threatening friendly countries with war.

Republic of China (now Taiwan) began in 1911. People’s Republic of China (mainland China today) only began in 1949. CCP split the original republic in 1949 and started another country. Who was the separatist?

Ironically, Taiwan's constitution says that taiwan and the mainland are a unified country

If Taiwan wanted to join China voluntarily, then that’s a completely different thing. The fact that China would have to invade Taiwan shows that China and Russia are one and the same.

Over 70 years ago, Moa agreed to the Marshall Plan and was given aid to defeat Japan. Moa was almost defeated and was down to only 1, 000 soldiers, until the USA saved his cause. At The same time, our aid was removed from Shek's Democratic Republic of China and that government moved itself to Formosa, later renamed Taiwan and the Chinese Communist Party took over the entire mainland. Moa could had easily launched a war against Formosa to "reunify" China, but that wasn't the deal he agreed to. What's driving China today, isn't about reunification, but control over shipping routes and better military strongholds. Make no mistake about it, China doesn't care anything about the Taiwanese, it's all about the land.

China is worried that the U.S. might be able to supply Taiwan as effectively as they have supplied Ukraine, causing Russia massive casualties. I believe in retrospect that China has missed it's best opportunity to invade Taiwan which would have been no more than a week after Russia invaded Ukraine. As the months pass Xi is ultimately going to come to the conclusion that China is alone in it's war and Taiwan is not.

China needs to take a real hard look at what is happening in Ukraine and think if they really want to go there.

"that ambiguity provides little comfort..." WRONG!
On the last referendum done with the taiwanese people, when inquired of 3 options.
1. Completely separate from China.
2. Completely become part of China.
3. Remain in the "ambiguity".
Taiwanese people voted with BIG majority in option 3!
The AMBIGUITY.
Taiwan profits from its status of belonging to China, according to China's view, and not belonging to China according to the US view. So, this news might be a bit tendencious...

Sometimes it makes sense to take an ambiguous pos'n, but it's not good to say things and later walk them back, OR be SEEN AS walking them back. That's not the same as ambiguity.

Or just you know, let Taiwan decide what to they rather do? But seeing Hong Kong I have my doubts about China leaving them alone.
