Yeah I feel you, Simon, I can't stand all the propaganda. I was really annoyed at how people were talking about the war when it began. After the US military “experts” told the media that Russia would win within a week, an assessment that I immediately thought was bogus, and then it didn't happen, everybody started talking about how Russia is really weak and a “paper tiger” and I was just rolling my eyes through all of it wanting to tell people how unrealistic those expectations were and that they don’t make Russia weak for not meeting them. Actually, when I did tell people that, they even got mad at me, especially when I started telling them a lot of what they were hearing was propaganda, like that fake “Ghost of Kiev” story. And then of course there was the media immediately flipping like "Ukraine is winning Ukraine is winning!" and they reported every Ukrainian military victory whilst entirely ignoring any Russian ones. When you look at the actual maps of Ukrainian-held vs Russian-held territory, they show Russia slowly but steadily gaining ground. Being an avid lover of military history I knew that everyone always expects a swift, smashing victory and they rarely ever happen. The Ukraine war was always going to be a long, bloody affair.

The counteroffensive was extremely hyped which probably made Russia try way harder to fortify, especially considering that they had months in advance to prepare before the counteroffensive began

I think there is also the problem of overestimation. The retreat from Kyiv, the counteroffensives in Kharkiv and Kherson set expectations too high.

Love the video! One criticism: for a show called Warographics there wasn't a lot of graphics besides somewhat related photos. Maybe some maps would be helpful? Can't wait for the next one!

Robots using plasma torches to dig through the ground is something straight out of Star Wars, been killed by a fuck ton of mining droids using plasma torches in KOTOR 2.

Really, the expectations for a breakthrough only came from people with little understanding of the conflict or war in general. Media then went with those expectations because they make good headlines.

Other than an early surprise, there was pretty much no chance there would be any major breakthrough.
