1 drop of dish soap in your water will lower surface tension and helps the cuttings flow better, it's basically what most water based cutting fluids are.

I use mineral oil. No smell no dangerous toxins and it’s almost as cheap as a bottle of water… in some cases cheaper.

I agree. Water works just fine. I’ve used oil on these and found that it clogged the stone. Then I had to use Dawn and water to remove the debris. So now I just skip the oil and go straight to the water. Works just as well.

its the debris that rusts; nickel doesn't rust easily; or does it at all?

The urge to joke about other liquids is strong.

I just use 3-in-1 oil or more recently, 100% pure pine essential oil. The smell is incredible and it's natural

Every product I've seen from dmt says to just use water too. Makes things nice and easy 👍

Rust is Iron Oxide, the same substance that's used in "Jewelers Rouge" to polish precious metals.

I had a spray bottle of Simple Green All-purpose cleaner sitting next to me when I was knife sharpening and gave it a try. Was very happy with the results and never sharpen without it now.

As steel rusts it flakes and can move the diamonds on your stone removing the flatness of it. It's not just a visual thing and can cause issues down the road. Use water if you want, ti's all good. But now you know.

Is anybody going to talk about the way he said, “more exotic fluids.” Like, there was way too long of a pause before he said that.

Using that exact set of stones (thank you so much for the video on them) perfectly dry with a brush handy to dust off the worst also works well so far for me.

depends a lot on where you live, Rex. I did the same as you, and the stones got rusty to the point of messing with the adhesion of the diamonds to the plate.

I use windshield cleaner on Paul Sellers' recommendation, but sometimes I forget to wipe up the excess after sharpening and I get rust anyway. Might switch to water when I'm out to save the money.

I get more worried about making my tools rusty. I know you can dry them and oil them, but I like the peace of mind of not needing to think about that as much.

Silicone 3-in-1 high temp fast drying oil was a life changer for all my stones. Works on diamonds, and pulls/cleans my wet stones/oil stones too.
No rust, easy cleaning, and dries with a super thin film that reanimates when a fresh application to use the stones is applied. Smell is quite subdued.

Use HoneRite, it just takes a tiny bit mixed into a liter of water and it prevents the water from rusting anything. and it doesn’t smell like anything, just turns your water slightly green. I bought a bottle a couple of years ago and still have some left

Transmission fluid work great. Easy to see when there’s a build up of material too.

I use light oil and then, if they need cleaning, I drop a bit dish detergent on the surface, rub it in until the swarf is in solution then a quick rinse in hot water and dry them. No rust even. The big trouble with rust is cheap stones where the nickle plating that holds the diamonds may be lifted off the steel.
