The Rush Moving Pictures 40th Anniversary Box Set is out! For the die-hard Rush fan, this is a much coveted set because it includes, among other things, a whole show from the Moving Pictures tour, separate from what we know today as "Exit... Stage Left".

With all the vinyl LP, CD's, and more paraphernalia, this set is quite expensive, even for a lover of Rush. In this video, I go over what this hard-core Rush fan ordered, and why I think it's more than enough for me.

I also wax poetic (a little) on why I'm not so crazy about vinyl, which has experimented a comeback in the last several years.

Hi !!! Omar!!!
Dear Sir... if you are a genuine 1970's child... Of course, I certainly do not want your exact D.O.B.!! I do however wonder if you were in the first third, middle third or last third of the 1970's??
I myself was born before the seventies exploded into a cornucopia of out and out ass kicking music, both in genre's and diversities in those genre's!!
Having said that, and while listening ever so very closely to your dialogue, I have to say a few things about your comments!!!
First and foremost... I am a professional A1 audio engineer, both in studio and live. I have worked with some of theeee very best and at the pinnacle of their careers!! I have a masters degree in audio, electrical/technical engineering in a studio format and a bachelor's of nearly the same, however the focus was on live sound in both a FOH enginerr as well as Tape operations engineer. I have for the most part, and as working under a contractual agreement in the form of a "Gag Order, " and with almost every artist I have worked with or For, have also been as a contingency clause to "residual financial" payments in any form, sworn to secrecy. That is believe it or not, a standard industry contractual clause. I of course as mentioned previously, am also a "gun for hire" drummer, mostly studio however and occasionally, as a live drummer as well, in the capacity of a "backing" band for an artist.
OK... NOW that the formalities are out of the way, I must address my concern(s) with your comment(s!!) I don't know you personally, however I do like your channel and as we have jointly in common, both being "brother" drummers and RUSH "admirers" (I hate the word "Fan, " or "Fan's, " as it is a shorter version of "Fanatics" or "Fanatical" and as by definition, I am not "overly obsessed, " "full of single minded zeal" or "extremely excessive!!" But, I am an admirer of the band and of course Neil!!
let's start with vinyl (L.P. albums) versus polycarbonate plastic (CD's) and the point of contention in, "tick, " "pop, " "hiss" as produced by vinyl, please know, that comes from a collection of bad habits by said owner of the vinyl!! Usually from and most importantly, mishandled vinyl, dirty vinyl, a shithouse turntable and an even shittier stylus (needle!!) True "audiophiles" would probably have their heads explode if they saw how some people's lack of care and disregard for their vinyl ruined a collective of the same!!!
But, let's back that whole "audiophile" thing up a rung or two, and bring into the light what "purist audiophiles" listen to....
TAPE, ¼, " ½, " 1" & 2" tape to be exact... I mean afterall, that IS why they are audiophiles in the first place!!! You would NEVER, EVER find CD's or DVD's in their house... well, unless they were using them for "kindling" to start a fire in their "overly, ridiculously large" fireplace!!! You may ask why...??? the answer lies in the statement you made of "Dynamic Range!!" But lets come bsck to that in a second....
With regards to acceptable dynamic range, and as follows, it is found as a "standard logarithmic value" between the quietest (noise floor) to the loudest (noise ceiling) value assigned to a sine wave of single or combined (and in this case) musical notes as recorded and captured for continuous playback for aural enjoyment (our happy ears as we jam out to our fave tunes!!) And with direct correlation to Dynamic Range, CD's or any form of digital playback media... yeah... THEY COME IN AT LAST PLACE.... good ole' #3.!!! Vinyl and arguably for all PRACTICAL PURPOSES SHOULD BE #1., HOWEVER, if we are talking nothing but dynamic range, then yeahhhh... vinyl is #2., leaving the top shelf, the penthouse of dynamic range, the best of the best, the G.O.A.T. even... and good ole' #1., TAPE... Yupper, Tape IS the only medium that can capture Dynamic Range in such a way that the human ear can not even decipher them!!! Because, remember, we as mere mortales can only hear from 20 hz. to 20Khz and by the time the average listener is in their mid thirties, it is even less on the upper range... and generally stopping around 13Khz, except for females!!! Women, unless they destroy their hearing from various occupations that are known to create tinnitus (ringing in the ears that comprises clarity of the upper registers of the audio range as we hear them) the occupations that are known to compromise dynamic range, and create tinnitus are .... #1. LOUD MUSIC, AND ALL THE TIME.., others are construction, nursing or any job that you expose your ears to sharp, piercing, and or extremely loud noises in combination with the aforementioned!!!
Now, let's get back to why CD's, which really is digitally captured music are notoriously finding themselves in last place on the "Who's who" of "what's the best" Dynamic Range media. Ya see, digital anything, is captured as 0's and 1's and in another form of an alogarithm, that when all put together, and replayed represents what we are hearing. Digital, and most importantly HAS NO ROOM FOR WARMTH, or DISTORTION!!! Meaning at ZERO dBFS with digital you have hit the distortion "ceiling" and can no longer express volume without compromising quality, as you will be distorting the entire Dynamic Range!!! Where with Analog (vinyl, even tape, though tape can express a bit more) really only starts to sound "warm" ( inviting, as in to our ears...) at +3 dBv, and we can even push that up to as much as +12 dBv and still not be fully distorted, some yes, it will be a bit "wonky" at the 3 "danger" regions, which would be extreme lows... around 10 -- 60 hz, the extreme mids... around 5Khz -- 9Khz and extreme hi's 16Khz -- 20Khz, but that is where the good old trusty Equalizer comes in!! I really don't want to get all crazy on the logistics of EQ's, comps and gates or any other "audio" lessons!!! This is all about Dynamic Range as compared to Vinyl vs. CD. I WILL SAY THIS, for convenience, reasonably good to very good sound on a consistent basis, YES, Omar, you can say that for all practical purposes, CD's are a better choice, albeit one that would cause our audiophile friends to want to jab ice picks in their ears, or perhaps, shoot themselves in the foot just to go to a place where music coming from a Compact Disc is not being bellowed out anymore is loud dissonant ways!! 😆🤣🤪
And we can now take our music with us wherever we go, we have a host of digital playback methods now, and they are just
But just remember, we have compromised quality for
ANYWAY, KEEP ON KEEPING ON BROTHER DRUMMER AND RUSH ADMIRER AND
PEACE
that was a mouthful!!! 😆🥴😵‍💫🥸🧐

Finally, a voice of reason. I don't understand the fascination with LP's these days. I always hated the constant hiss, pop's, and click's that are inherent in vinyl. When cd's came out, I was so happy with the pure sound without the distracting flaws of LP's.

I'm with you, on that vinyl thing. I spent a lot of money on Discwasher. And plastic dust sleeves for every record. I cleaned every record I ever played right before I played it. And I still got dust with skips and pops on the records. Couldn't win with those things

Thanks for sharing! It would have been nice if the flats were separate so you could frame and display them side by side.

The vinyl is 180 gr. Fantastic. Your prerogative if you don’t want it. Also, I knew how special Rush was at the time. 1981 for me. Can’t go wrong with any of the options.

Rush vinyl never has that crappy noise. That's just a crappy record player with a worn needle. Vinyl with a really good player with a sharp needle and quality pickup sounds amazing.

I just splurged for the full set. I have heard a number of them shipped with damaged pieces...we'll see.

LOL. High quality vinyl on good equipment does not have "snaps crackles and pops". Just because you don't prefer the format, which is perfectly fair, doesn't mean you need to generalize with your own bad experience on every vinyl release. I have the MP 40th on vinyl and have a decent, not great, but decent system, and it sounds *amazing*. Absolutely ZERO snaps crackles or pops. Enjoy your tiny artwork and CDs which scratch if you look at them wrong.

I do apologize but I bought the box set in vinyl, personally I like vinyl but I think it is just personal preference

Rush has some of the worst production quality for any major band, especially one that is so highly talented. So it’s not surprising that you don’t like vinyl. except for a few records the majority of rush records are horribly produced, thin sounding lacking midbass terrible weak mix, put to shame by their peers such as Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan in terms of production and quality audio file sound. Light years beyond anything rush has ever produced sound quality wise. Rush has just terrible taste in production.
