What do you think of when you hear the term "decimate"? You probably thought "annihilate" or something similar. It actually means "to reduce by a tenth", which is quite clear by it's prefix "deci-". It's fundamentally transformed into the opposite of it's original meaning. The same happened with the term "Christianity"; "Christ-" no longer has any bearing on its meaning.
