You can do the second problem in only 6 moves instead of 8. You first do the blue (1 move), then do the green and orange to the correct sides (3 moves) which makes the red go up with only 2 more moves needed to solve it (one to align it and one 180º move to bring it down).

And even when I did know how to solve it I always had problems with the cross cuz I did it the way you were saying not to.
