Jakob was my Organic Chem II professor, and learning from him is a delight. This talk is very indicative of his teaching style. UIdaho lost him as a professor, which is sad, but he helped me love Ochem. 10/10 professor

Organic chemistry was all fun and games until the exams 😩

I 100% agree, but as a current orgo 2 student, the professors make it all about memorization and grades, and med schools make it all about that letter grade. I don't think we're afraid of the material itself, but of the expectations that come along with taking a course like this.

I hate it when people say "don't be afraid of this" and then just brushes through the basics like wtf dude, it's not the basics that's tough! Geez

I want to learn and and not get intimidated by courses like such, but when they accompany these courses with tests, assignments deadlines, timmed quizes, papers, the grading system, etc it's hard not to get intimidated...

Prof showed this to us last year on the 1st day of Ochem 1, it definitely motivated me. I got Bs in both Ochem 1 & 2, which may not be impressive to others but im very proud of myself

Ochem day 1: Oh, look at these adorable bond-line structures!

Ochem day 2-on: You have to memorize a dozen multi-step synthesis and their exceptions for every exam.

Ochem prof: lol why you scared?

This course gave me stress, anxiety, and also made me grow tremendously. As much as I hate it, I would take it again because my Ochem professor was one of the most amazing professors. So, yes! I would go through it again.

I have such love for this science which made the class even more discouraging not because it was hard, but because there was a large amount of thoughts/ideas without the proper depth of explanation. O-Chem 1 literally dips your toe into the real world of chemistry with expectations to know less and memorize more. The entire semester I found myself asking, "yeah.... but why??" with answers along the lines of, "you'll learn that later". This lead to a consistant 77-78% in the class with exams that I felt as if I was being asked complex questions with provided generalized information. I am an analytical thinker and could care less for memorization because memorization and comprehension are not equal. I am not paying tuition to memorize, I am paying tuition to LEARN.

I took it twice, dropped it and then I transferred to another college retook it and my teacher changed my whole perspective on it. I started to understand and love chemistry. I use to be scared because I didn’t understand it and hated it. I’m forever thankful for my professor changing my perspective.
