MicroNugget: What is TRILL?
Показать описание
In this video, Anthony Sequeira covers TRILL. Back when building large Layer 2 networks seemed like the best way to scale up to hundreds of nodes, STP's original developer created TRILL to make use of IS-IS and ECMP. Watch to learn about TRILL's history and the routing technology it uses.
Through the leveraging of ECMP and IS-IS, Radia Perlman proposed TRILL as an alternative to the complexity of spanning tree technologies like STP, RSTP and MSTP. For its part, STP enabled redundant paths in the Layer 2 Domain by dynamically blocking particular links so there wouldn't be any loops in the topology. But that had a drawback: some links end up getting rendered useless when STP blocks them in particular topologies — even if we're paying for those links in bandwidth. TRILL was introduced as a replacement to STP and was based on the idea of scaling upward by way of Layer 2. By drawing from Layer 2 routing intelligences like IS-IS and ECMP, TRILL worked to accommodate tremendous numbers of nodes with lots of redundant connectivity.
