For me it's usually hard to get into the first few pages and chapters of books but I actually didn't have a problem with this one! I was hooked from the very first chapter, I think!

What really sold the book for me was the ending 😭 and the interesting villains as well! I'm super invested and can't wait to read the rest (loved the audiobook BTW... Why did Marc Thompson make Marchion Ro sound so hot tho? 👀). I'm about to start A Test of Courage! 😁 So excited to continue through this era!

Thanks for sharing! I agree with your qualms, praise, and predictions. The first 100 pages were bogged down by exposition and character introductions. The Nihil kind of annoyed me, but Marchion Ro is a promising agent of chaos (and oddly, control). LOVE Loden Greatstorm! Hope he ends up ok, but we know tragic things are coming in the overall era

I like a little action in my Star Wars books, and generally enjoyed the first section. But yeah, there was a lot going on there and a lot of different characters to keep track of. And by the end of that section it was definitely getting tiresome and I was thinking "I hope the whole book isn't like this!"

But the second section (and most of the third), particularly the chapter that introduced the bad guys in their lair... Awesome. 🙂 I think the bad guy is definitely the most compelling character in the High Republic so far, and my favorite Star Wars villain in a while!

3:08 you think it will lead to revolt, civil war and the chancellor being overthrown. Are you referring to the prequels or theorising that this will happen in the high republic? Because all of these things definitely happen and it leads to the creation of the empire.

Awesome review. A lot of my own thoughts and takeaways, so I am glad to hear I wasn’t imagining them. I felt like I needed almost the first third of the book just to ingest the amount of characters/ship names/species before I could really focus on the actual story which I felt was a little of a dud. Great concepts but meh execution. But, the last third I was hooked and I went from not being interested in this series to really wanting to dive into the next book.

I’ve read the first 3 chapters so far and it’s starting off super interesting. But I’ve seen a. Lot of really poor reviews so I’m a little nervous for the rest of the story. Hopefully this wasn’t a waste of like $30 for the book and audiobook 😬

They didnt even kill that many characters that got big introductions.
Yeah some died but certainly not every chapter
