I mainly use quartz there’s a ton of it here in Utah (it helps to get more sparks and keep the weight down if you Knapp some flakes.)

Yes as long as the quartz is harder than the striker and the striker steel can be shaved by the quartz edge. It's the metal shaved from the striker that create the spark and not the rock/flint that emit a spark..
