I was really expecting "... Jolof. JOLOF THEIR WALLETS", the surgery recovery must be hitting him harder than he's letting on.

For the natives I like to pick the middle option (-50% chance of uprisings) then get the Clergy privilege that reduces it by another 50% (making it zero), as well as gives a boost to assimilation

What also would be fun is if you could try to stop every other country from colonizing by taking their coast lines (at least the european ones) or whatever while colonizing as much as you can yourself. I tried but I am not good enough

Christopher Columbus tried to convince the Portuguese to back his trip west. The Portuguese had two reasons not to do this. 1) They were invested in going east, by going around africa to get to india and 2) They knew that the trip west would be too far and that no ship could carry enough fresh water to survive the journey.

For whatever reason, Columbus was convinced that the earth was smaller than all the measurements showed that it was, he thought he could cross the western ocean and survive. Queen Isabella decided to back him and he went west.... he got very lucky, and landed in a place that the europeans had no idea was there.

People knew since antiquity earth was round. Greek mathematician Eratostenes calculated its size. He realised there's no shade in some days in Alexandria, so based on a very well measured distance between Alexandria and another city where there was shade at 1 degree. He took that distance and multiplied it by 360 and he got 40 000 km, which is 500 km short. Quite a good job.

Ludi, if you move your capital to just the New World (Bermuda) then you'll still have South America form colonies, if you want to avoid ALL colonies you'll have to move your capital to South America, preferably Brazil no biases there.

I was playing portugal yestreday but in 1453 start date. I changed my capital to ceuta thinking that I could later change my capital into a colonial province. Didn't realise 1453 Portugal has Arguin colonized as well.

I'm always confused with that Comet event. Comets are seen for a few weeks from all around the world (well, at least whole North/South hemisphere). This event should apply to all countries at once!

WTF what was the point in getting 5 loans at the start? Got owned by all the interest and had no money to colonize...

Here in brazil i learned in school that the Portuguese allways kinda new that there was a continent west but they never bothered. Also learned that when Cabral (or even colombo) were sent, the intention was already to grow profitable crops that are more adapted to the American climate (mainly sugar cane and i think cotton to)

Do the Brazzers challenge.
I'm having massive blast playing Portugal of late. They are indeed amazingly set up for colonial empire/trade domination. With nodes adjused, and Castille/Spain screwed, you can end up with 70% world trade streaming to Seville, right into your coffers.

Ludi, going west was Columbus' idea, the portuguese led by many others but mainly Vasco da Gama (The first to reach India by sea) went south and around Africa to reach Asia. On one of those voyages south Pedro Álvares Cabral was blown off course and accidentally discovered Brasil.

Also trade companies give bonus to goods produce in non-trade company provinces in the same node. The amount of goods produced is based on trade influence of the company and institutions accepted (20% per each institution in 100% trade influence of the trade company).
So the best option if you have the entire region is to put 1-3 states in trade company possession and max trade influence in these very regions up to 50% of the node. That gives you from 10 to 70% goods produced in region adn 1 merchant.
That strat is so effective that some country like ottos can make 500 incame in 1500 by using that feature.
