On 18 February 2006, during a 1–0 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup, Alan Smith broke his leg and dislocated his ankle while attempting to block a free kick from Liverpool's John Arne Riise, an injury described by Fergie as "one of the worst I've seen".

Brave lad to even try to block a Riise thunderbolt, fair play to him. Riise was gutted about the injury, really upset him, he contacted Smith straight away after the game and kept in touch messaging him to check up on him. Just one of those things I guess that happens to unlucky players

It was a terrible injury, ...but the worst i ever saw was coventry player David Busst in 1996 at old Trafford, ...his leg literally folded over after a clash with uniteds brian mcclair and Dennis irwin, ...and suffered grotesque compound fractures to his leg, they even had to bring sand onto the pitch to cover the blood that had puddled there, ....horrific injury, nightmare for the poor lad
