Rat traps are more humane than sticky traps

hey so I do this for a living. it's important that you do a number of things. firstly it looks like you probably have a roof rats. So they are likely not feeding on a source within your home, so there's not much you can do about that. but, you have exclusion issues. they probably set up a nest in your home and they are assessing your home via overhanging branches, telephone wires, or other vegetation that's just too near it. either higher a contractor or go out with steel mesh and heavy duty staples and check the eaves of your home and anywhere where the rodents could get into your attic. after that, continue using those snap traps but don't just place them willy-nilly. place them along where you think the rats are running. they will establish the causeways in your attic and then follow those blindly. So you don't even have to bait them. although bait certainly does help. You can also go and get throw packs of attractant. I personally use Final, although if you don't have a pesticide license I'm not sure if that's available to you, but modern day attractant and poison will desecate the body so you don't get weird smells!

You’re telling me you’ve lived in that house for how long without knowing what’s in the attic???

Sticky traps are extremely inhumane. And the _best_ poisons take 3-4 days of suffering. Traditional snap traps are definitely the way to go.

Rats are quite intelligent, and are usually more trap-shy than mice, and the older/experienced ones will either avoid traps altogether, or do what they did here and carefully lick the peanut butter off the trigger. The younger rats are more likely to fall for it, which is what it looks like you've caught.

Someone mentioned putting the traps along their travel/entry route (I think they mentioned that they work in rat/pest control). This statement is correct, and is extremely good advice. I would suggest putting the traps on a hair trigger, but it wouldn't be as easy to do that and be able to place them in those key areas without risking the trap snapping on your fingers - and rat traps can hurt quite a bit.
Probably look at using other baits as well, or mix in something solid alongside the peanut butter so they have to apply more pressure to get the food off. Perhaps some sunflower seeds (raw, bird feed).

I recommend Shawn Woods' videos on rat traps if you want to try something other than snap traps. These are one of the more humane traps (generally quick, as long as the impact is around the neck area and not a limb), but there are more options for "population control" traps. Don't recommend glue traps at all... Slow, painful, and it stinks rather badly if forgotten.

I also had rats in my attic easy method mix a couple cotton balls with your peanut butter and use a butter knife to wedge a little bit of that peanut butter cotton ball under the end of the lip of the trap That way they automatically try to take it rather than stand there and completely lick the trap clean That way instead of having to rebait the trap over and over and over again I found out that this method usually last at least a week or so before they finally completely remove it. Also another method that I have used is to get A sponge and cut a piece off and glue it superglue it to the trap and then Soak that piece of sponge with peanut butter That way it's harder for them to remove it without setting the trap off good luck Luke

Use a type of nut instead of peanut butter. I find pecans work really well. You can really smash the nut into the trap and make it harder for the mouse to get any reward without triggering it

Those traps are like trying to save a boat from sinking with a bottle cap. You need to seal your roof to prevent access from the outside and use a professional exterminator

They are conniving little buggers. Keep trying, you'll get them eventually. Try putting less peanut butter on. A bigger glob means they can sit right there and eat off of it without setting it off. Smaller amount means they're more likely to hit the metal and set it off. Also, try the kind with the yellow base on it. It's a wider lever they have to step on so a better chance to get them!
