Taiwanese artillery shoots down aerial targets in live fire drills

TAIWANESE artillery trainees shot down aerial targets during live fire drills on Tuesday (July 4), footage released by Taiwan’s military showed.

The trainees fired Stinger missiles and operated Avenger air defence missile systems at a coastal drill zone in Pingtung county near the far southern tip of the island. This is the second consecutive day of live fire drills held by Taiwan's military along the island's southern coast.

Eight Chinese aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday morning, Taiwan's defence ministry spokesperson Sun Li-fang told reporters after the live drills.

Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory despite the island's strong objections, has faced in recent years almost daily missions by Chinese military aircraft, often in the southwestern part of the island's air defence identification zone.
