Trying a more efficient 49:1. DX to New Zealand on 10 watts!

Smaller cores make for more efficient 49:1 matching transformers. Whether that extra 5-10% efficiency is actually important is legitimately debatable, but it's always nice to get as much power out as possible! Today, I hiked up to the top of Silver Star Mountain for a SOTA activation with my KX2 and End Fed Half Wave antenna to try out a new 49:1. I also ended up making a VHF contact with a station 169 miles away!

Stunning views from up there in that weather. Excellent results with the tiny un-un too. 👍

Stella effort Josef, well done. It is always a buzz when you get a very distant SOTA contact. Brazil and Montana are the best I have managed so far and also on 10 watts. Would really like a video on your Unun if there is enough interest. Am always looking for ways to better fine tune my portable setup.

I don't know if you mentioned it or not. What was the ferrite core material? Nice activation and cool that you got Japan and New Zealand. Those are always a lot of work from the state of Kansas! 73

So good, loved watching this - 10 and 15 are on fire right now. Would love to know what core you're using.
