I love the moment when she says "yes" She almost purrs. And the awkward pause after where Blair has gotten the message but has to ask again to get the why.
It's the best example of a "yes" meaning "NO." That callback to the moment earlier in the show where the Duke of Windsor knew he was "out."

Tbh Denmark had the better idea when Prince Joachim and Alexandra, Countess of Fredioriksborg got divorced. Queen M gave Alexandra the lesser rank of Her Highness Princess of Denmark and the Countess title (making her a noble in her own right) and set her up on the civil list for life. While this may not have given her an official role, it gave her the status and wealth to continue her career as patron of multiple organisations and charities so even when she remarried (dropping the princess title but not countess title and choosing to relinquish her civil list settlement) she still had a sense of direction.
Wasn’t the same in the UK however since all new titles have to have some precedent and while the lesser noble princely title of Serene Highness was used at some point, as it was mostly German nobility that used it, all of the British Royal family’s relatives in 1917 were made to either give them up or forced to deal with their titles no longer being recognised in the UK (cus ya know WW1). Problem is, no HRH back then meant no place in the firm. Appears to be changing a bit now at least with Anne and Edward’s children being brought into the fold more often despite having no titles/noble titles.

This is as merciful to Diana as it is to Charles, and to any hypothetical future spouses of either. “Sorry, darling, can’t make our anniversary date as I have inescapable royal duties at my ex-husband’s house and I can’t be absent or reschedule.” “By the way, dear, my ex-wife will be here at the palace all afternoon working with me on this charitable project - can’t be helped, I’m afraid. Part of the carried-over, binding job.” It just wouldn’t work or be fair on anyone.

Absolutely true. You can't have your cake and eat it.

It seems cold, but Her Majesty is justified in this stance. Even though Diana has given birth to a future monarch, giving her any major role with the RF after her divorce from Charles and her HRH status pulled, it would be utterly improper, if not extremely awkward.

Nice scene. Keep it coming with the crown videos.

She could've just ran for a seat in Parliament if she really wanted to devote herself to public service. I'm sure it wouldn't have been hard to garner voters for her election.

never really understood this scene. Looked like Lady Di was looking for a job in government, not a representative of the RF.

This is why we all preferred Princesse Diana, aka the Queen of Hearts.

The "in or out"is what actually killed her. Had she stayed in because she was the mother of the future King she would have had decent security. Not a half drunk idiot riding into the tunnel.

The thing is, theoretically Diana could have played a superb role in representing great Britain. But she was too much of a loose canon, she hung out with rather qiestionable people, and her Bashir interview was still fresh in mind.

I can't read all the Comments to see if anyone made this point before me:

I know "The Crown" is a dramatization and not to be taken as fact. But to follow what the Queen here said:

... "You're either IN the Royal Family, or you're OUT" ...

... The logical and appropriate response for Tony Blair at that point should have been ...

... "Thank you ma'am. In that case, i see that your permission is not needed. I and the Government will make the decision. A former HRH is no longer under your control."

Dear Lord! The Queen reminds me so much of my Grandmother it gives me sweats and chills, and I’m an American😜🇺🇸

That said, I do miss her so, and everything she taught me, even the ice and cold of her advice has turned our to be 100% correct.

There’s many more ways to say “I Love You!” Than actually saying it. And actions speak louder than Words.

She was a National Treasure. Oh, Which one? Both of them.

I think we know some other royals who are learning this as well currently .

If you divorce, you're out of your family in law, that's just common sense.

Was that supposed to be Tony Blair? He doesn't look the part.

Truth be told, Diana had A LOT to offer as a public figure. The Royal family didn't know the potential she had at being their Ambassador to the people. If she's happy then the public thinks well of the Royal Family, if shes visibly unhappy then people want to know what's wrong. When she speaks on an important issue, the people know she has a strong moral compass and would listen and support her side (ex. The landmine thing). The Queen should have considered her a valuable ally.

Sure Charles would be King and while bound to all the duties of the crown, he'd not necessarily be great as a public figure, she would be instrumental at handling the public relations end of things. Considering the Queen met and found respect for Jackie Kennedy and the role she played as First Lady and in later life, she should have seen Diana as someone who too could have such a legacy and help preserve the monarchy into the 21st century.

It's insane how much the Royal Family engaged in self sabotage from a lack of self awareness. So may times they made a decision that blew up in their face with greater consequences than what they were attempting to avoid.

This season, Staunton is better costumed and seems more comfortable in the role.

In reality, I heard the Queen wanted her to keep her titles but Charles refused it. William promised her he'd give it back when he was King.
