〜Brush With The Blues

Geoffrey Arnold Beck (24 June 1944 – 10 January 2023) was an English guitarist. He rose to prominence as a member of the rock band the Yardbirds, and afterwards founded and fronted the Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice. In 1975, he switched to an instrumental style with focus on an innovative sound, and his releases spanned genres and styles ranging from blues rock, hard rock, jazz fusion and a blend of guitar-rock and electronica.

ABOUT this coincert:
In the mid-seventies guitarist Jeff Beck released Blow by Blow and Wired, two albums that are considered the best and most successful instrumental fusion albums ever. But also before and after these milestones this master guitarist had – and still has – a striking career. We first learned about the now 61-year-old Beck back in the beginning of the sixties, when he replaced Eric Clapton in The Yardbirds. A few years later he started his Jeff Beck Group, featuring a/o Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, and he laid out the fundaments of a style that, later, was to be called heavy metal. The fact that Beck often interrupted his career in the following years has everything to do with his adoration for fast cars. He loves being in the garage under a Corvette just as much as being in the studio or on stage with a guitar. And it’s on stage where he manages to draw the strangest sounds from his instrument and usually he does that with out any sound processing pedals. He once said in an interview: “I love it when people come and listen to my music and can’t seem to figure out which instrument I am playing.” Jeff Beck is definitely one of the big names of the impressive fusion program North Sea Jazz presents this year. Drummer Vinnie Colaiuta is a musician with the same reputation. He can be heard on the albums of Sting, Zappa and Joni Mitchell and he sets an example for many drummers.

Jeff was a better guitar player at 70 than he was at 35....who else can do that?? The GOAT!

Of course Jeff Beck was a Legend, and rightfully so. But Vinnie Colaiuta's drumming is killer and deserves much greater name recognition when discussing greatest drummers of modern times.

Listening to Jeff Beck is such a thrill that every time I think that if I had to give an example of what a gift from heaven is, I think of him.

All hail the master...so many other guitarists say he's the guy. Who could disagree? The sounds and textures created so seemingly effortlessly are otherworldly and always leave me stunned and amazed. The thing about Jeff is his music is so much more than technique. I feel like he's able to make us hear exactly what he's hearing - how many musicians can really do that?

Clapton has always been my guitar hero from when I started playing back in the late sixties for straight blues type playing. Jeff is different and I doubt anyone will ever match his mastery of the guitar as a versatile instrument. I'm not sure wether the Strat was invented for Jeff or Jeff was invented for the Strat but no matter, never going to get such a perfect marriage again . I have so many personal favourites such as Clapton, Gary Moore, Roy Buchanan etc but Jeff's style and techniques are far beyond normal guitar playing and what a privilege it is for us mere mortals to witness this guitar God.

An absolute master of his instrument. He owns that guitar and tells it what to say. Out of this world music.

I remembered close to twenty years ago when my oldest son was just about out of high school and started playing guitar, he would talk about all of the guitarists he was listening to at the time. I took him to my album collection and took out albums by John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck. I let my son listen to Beck's Blow by Blow and Wired, and my son was blown away. Diamond Dust is still one of my favorite Beck jams to this day. Jeff Beck will forever be in the top ten of greatest guitar players out there.

The only guitarist who can play one note over two bars and thrill you. Always unpredictable - makes everyone else seem pedestrian.
