The Non-Canon Expert looks at the lessons Luke Skywalker learned about the dark side after he joined the returned clone of Emperor Palpatine six years after the Battle of Endor, explaining why he made the decision to join Palpatine, how the truth he learned about the dark side could help him and the Jedi fight against it, and how this compared to Jedi teachings that existed millennia before Luke's path with the dark side.

This is a Legends story for Luke Skywalker and the events that occurred after Episode 6: Return of the Jedi with information found in a number of Legends sources, but primarily within "Star Wars: Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force." I hope that you enjoy it!

Historically when a jedi plays the double agent to defeat the evil guy from the inside out it never works. It didn't work for Ulic Qel Droma, Quinlan Voss and it didn't work for Luke either. But Luke discovered the dark side is a side of the force that everyone has, and that the right thing is not purge but control it.

Darkness without light is a void. Light without darkness is blinding.

What’s interesting about this is that it’s exactly what Palpatine tried to explain to Anakin when he made his initial dark side sales pitch. “Anakin....In order to understand the great mystery, one must embrace all its aspects, not just the narrow, dogmatic view of the Jedi. In order to become a complete and wise leader, one must embrace a ~larger~ view of the force.” Even though I wasn’t a fan of the clone Palpatine concept, I do really like the lesson Luke learned and his enlightened perspective at the end. It’s such a tragedy that this enlightened Luke was tossed out and replaced with a humiliated coward who knew nothing and almost killed his own nephew.

"Everyone can be redeemed..." How I wish canon Luke knew this earlier...

Luke is more or less a Grey Jedi after he left Clone Sidous, and i like that. One more way Luke was better then Jedi like Obi Wan and Yoda. don't fight or suppress it, just know how to control it, like Mace Windu

The Senates' Clones were very impressive, he must've been very proud.

Fear of the Dark Side was the ultimate failing of the Republic Jedi Order; shielding their padawans from even the slightest hint of the Dark which left the Order completely incapable of facing it in the end. I love the moment in the Revenge of the Sith novel when Yoda realises that he & the Jedi spent the last 1000yrs preparing for the wrong war because of their blinding distrust & fear of the Dark Side.
Thanks for another great video xx

Expanded Universe/"Legends" Luke Skywalker was not only a Grand Jedi Master but led the New Jedi Order and was a badass with a redhead hot wife named Mara Jade.

It took luke an entire saga to figure out what Windu explained in a sentence. "I don't fear the dark side, I fear those who do."

Dark Empire might not be the greatest Star Wars story ever told, but I love it exactly for this, for what lessons it provides to Luke. That the Dark Side was not to be feared but to be accepted, that love for family and friends could redeem instead of doom - that, to me, is what makes Luke the first of the new Jedi, the very basis of the New Jedi Order.

Great analogy of Luke and his exploration of the dark side. His realization that the dark side of the force is something that should be explored carefully and respected versus feared and forbidden truly makes Luke one of the greatest Jedi of all time.

You didnt mention though how Luke became too immersed in the dark side unable to find his way back to the light side after the death of the cloned Palpatine. It was Leia's love that brought him back to the light just as Vader's love for his family did. Certainly Vader had a few other reasons as well too.

Could hear the choir in my head during Luke's overpowering of Vader at the start. Fantastic scene.

I liked how Luke understood you can’t have one without the other and that the Jedi and Sith were so blind to it, they couldn’t see past what they believed was the right side of the force.

When tempted by the dark, do not act; ask where the fear or anger is coming from within yourself, and adress it first. The dark side will always exist. But the fear and anger with you can be dealt within you, not by burying it. Accept that some things are beyond your control.
