As a scotsman, and also a guitarist who is awful at fingerstyle pieces, mad respect for doing that

The Scots lute repertoire is amazing - in addition to Pickering, there's Straloch, Rowallen, Wemyss, Balcarres, even Skene (if one has an octave lute or mandora handy!). Such a rich treasure trove of Lallans music (and a few Gaelic wire harp tunes learned and performed and transcribed by Scots lutenists!).

Brilliant, touching performance!

Last time I was this early, this tune was only 150 years old.

Beautifully played! 👍🏼

Scots on both sides, so this song warmed the cockles of my heart!

He plays it so well because he was there when this was written.

I absolutely love the sound of this. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the ballad Barbara Allen that my grandfather played on the Appalachian Dulcimer when I was a kid. Absolutely beautiful.

Ahhh, a gorgeous and oddly bittersweet melody, one you obviously have a simpatico with and a feel for. And a truly wonderful sounding lute. I so appreciate your passion for these antique instruments, Brandon. Even though I’m primarily a keyboardist these days, I’ve had an unexplainable love for lutes, theorbos and chitarrones since I was a kid. Thank you for bringing these amazing instruments to an entirely new audience with expertise and soul, and for keeping it so alive.

you can hear the longing... I love those resolution voicings

Amazing. It brings to mind all sorts of Scottish tunes that came after, especially "Loch Lomond".

This performance (the piece, the playing, everything) has a real warmth to it.

I have arrived to this song in my lute practice book, I can’t wait to obtain the level of proficiency required to play past the first 5 notes 😂❤

"Some say he made the minstrels undergarments smell of swamp fish for many moons with his majestic fingering of the lute"

That was a gorgeous interpretation, Brandon. I’m just learning the lute and this is my second piece. I played it quickly and rather straight with only a few trills but your version makes me think of the bagpipes playing on the Scottish highlands. It’s very evocative and gives a sense of longing. I’m going to have another go at it and bring in some of the elements you’ve shown here. Thank you for the beautiful lesson.

I refuse to believe that someone could listen to this and not immediately begin to think in a deeper voice saying "and so, as our brave adventures arose to the dawning of a new day, they knew all was well for them. For they had not just their strength, or their wit, they knew, no matter what, they had eachother."

Very fine, good musicians (artists) can make you appreciate things you disliked before...this helps you see other people you may have not understood. Thanks Brandon.
