I collected water off my tarp during heavy storm overnight. I imagined it to be clean and clear by the morning .It was the colour of cold black tea. I was in the woods though, i think its because it ran off the trees branches and twigs.

If done wrong, every single action you take (or don't take for that matter) can kill you. In a survival situation, you are constantly weighing the pros/cons, the risks/rewards, and the danger/safety of every action/inaction.

Don’t lay sticks on top of the Mylar. Wrap/roll them inside of the edges. You can use cordage to tie rocks underneath of the lower side of the Mylar. This way, you eliminate chances of contamination to that which may be present on your cordage.

Depending on how you're collecting the rain. If you're drinking from a puddle. Sure there's potential for bacteria. If you collect it in a container. As it falls from the sky. You shouldn't have any issues.
In all likelihood, if you don't across a fresh puddle. You should be fine with that too. Boil it, or use another purification method. If you have one available but in an emergency. You should be fine. If the puddle wasn't there before the rain and it's only a few hours old. Especially if it's still raining.
More water is safe to drink. Than people think anyways. I'm fifty years old and I've been drinking straight from the brooks and streams all my life and I've never gotten sick. Had the squirts once and that was probably coincidence.
