Nostalgia is unreal. As a little kid, i played this game for at least hundreds of hours. I'd spend whole days on my mom's computer waiting for a gold box. I was completely f2p so even as a 7yo i would be extremely dedicated to the game, i even tracked my effort and progress in simple charts at some point. All of the public library computers were always occupied by my peers playing Tanki Online. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

bro the peak of this game was insane, being able to pick a match, name it, the great UI, fun gameplay and the thrill when the goldbox fell... I used to play it for years, put hundreds of hours into it and I tried it yesterday. It only improved in terms of graphics. I had fun, but it was really mostly based on my nostalgia for the prime Tanki.

I've played this game myself for a solid 5 years, but I quit in 2020, somehow I kept playing (maybe because I used to be a buyer kinda), and I had a ton of great experiences with it, but it's just saddening how much they ruined it throughout the years.
Nontheless, Tanki will always have a special place in my heart, atleast the old Tanki.

this is so insane to me. as a russian kid, i played this game with my friend every evening after school but i never thought it was that popular. i thought it was just a nieche flash game that only a russians heard about but to see that so many foreigners also experienced my childhood is so wild to me

This game is full of memories. But in 2014 I had to take a break, cuz I went abroad. Then when I returned to the game around 2018, the game had changed greatly and just didn't seem to be as fun as it was before. First I just thought that I had grown older and lost my joy of the game, but it turns out the entire community started to dislike the game. Really sad to see such a great game completely die over. But alas, thank you tanki for making my childhood so much better. :)

I remember very old version of it. Don't know the year exactly.
So, there were only 4 tiers of turret/hull upgrades: M0 (stock), M1, M2 and M3
You had to grind for several ranks to get another weapon. But it was enjoyable grind. Every new gun I was unlocking was very exciting because I spent time grinding it and after unlocking it I could get unique experience using this gun.
You played matches against players whose ranks were slightly higher than yours, they had turrets you hadn't and you wanted to grind more to unlock and try them.
Also upgrading turrets and hulls wasn't hard. While grinding for new guns and upgrades you were collecting decent amount of crystals, so when you got new rank, you could either upgrade turret/hull or buy a new one without any problems.
And then "rebalance" happened.

Devs moved all turrets and all hulls to the beginning of the game. Now to get and play with any gun in the game you needed only about 15 ranks.
But they made upgrade cost VERY high.
For me, if was first game fall. I didn't want to grind for a slightly better versions of guns I already had and dropped the game for a long period.

As someone, who played as a little kid in the Golden Ages of Tanki Online, I find this video VERY nostalgic. This is sad how almost all of the web games slowly died because of "I love money" moment

This is so nostalgic 🥲 I started playing in 2011. I quit tanki in 2016, and started playing again since 2020. Never felt the same anymore as in the good ol' days. 😭

I found Tanki in late 2015 and it was the first game I actually got seriously addicted to. I remember staying up for most of the night on special events such as Halloween, where they had maps with increased gold box drop rates, and even tentatively participating in some of their organised esports competitions. I was even a staff member for a short time. Met some really cool people, though sadly (like everyone else) fell into the trap of paying "$5" just to skip the grind. I revisited Tanki last year and it was sad to see what had happened to it. It had become a game where you needed to basically pay to stay ahead of everyone else.

Man it's painful to see this part of my childhood be destroyed by greed.

Those multiple hour long games on Silence CTF, those were the days. The golden era of Tanki was really something special. The devs seemed so passionate about their game back then; who remembers the time the devs cracked down on gem hackers and held an event during which they "redistributed" the wealth back to the common player? I've never seen so many gems, and was able to afford my M2 Thunder.

I can't believe I had already forgotten the blast I had with this game. Really wish some other game company (even if it's small) would try to recreate the game similar to the 2012-2014 golden days. Whilst also keeping in mind how greed has ruined countless free to play games over the years.
