And Abrams's name was chosen for the modern Main battle tank designated as M1 Abrams

The tiger tank featured in Fury is indeed Tiger 131, one of the last remaining intact and functioning heavy tanks of its kind.

I served under Abram's son in Iraq. We referred to him as "son-of-a-tank". He became a 4-star general. Super intense dude. I guess that is what happens when your dad is a tank

General Abrams two sons were also Generals. I met General John Abrams when he was TRADOC commander. Very personable and very friendly. I flew as a crew chief for many generals and he was by far the most likable.

The M2 was added for anti-aircraft defense and the 1919 in front of the Commander was anti-personnel. Two different uses.

Were you aware in the film Fury that they had an actual WWII Sherman tank veteran on set as an advisor and he made the comment that *all* the actors were too old. I think Pitt was 50 or 52 years old at the time which was *twice* as old as an actual _old man_ in a WWII tank crew.

Originally the .50 was mounted on the commander's hatch, and it's purpose was as an anti aircraft gun mostly, but from what I read it was kind of uncomfortable to use or get in/out through that hatch with it, so they switched to a .30
But they mounted the .50 in the rear because; well, it's a .50, you need all the firepower you can get. Also, like in Fury, infantry coukd mount the tank and use the .50 as the tank was supoorting them in their advance.

The 2 .30s were also commonly used to "delouse" friendly tanks. You spray friendly tanks with them to keep enemy infantry and panzergrenadiers off the tank

And then 5 years after Abrams' death, Chrysler Defense invents the M1 Abrams tank we all know and love today. Two years after it initially enters the army, in 1982, General Dynamics purchased Chrysler and manufacturers over 3, 200 M1 Abrams all within the next 3 years.

Fun fact - although not an Army Ranger...Gen Creighton founded the Ranger Regiment during that same time frame...He was way ahead of his time.

"A famous tank that had an additional .50 cal machine gun"

* shows a picture with the tank having a .30 cal machine gun *

Actually. In 1945, most easy 8s moved the 50 cal in front of the loaders hatch and a 30 cal 8n front of the TC hatch. Abrams's tank has a 30 cal and a 50 cal just like I said.

In the movie Fury Brad Pitts character is named War Daddy, paying homage to the tank commander in WWII with the most US kills and one of the longest service records, who was also named War Daddy.

Creighton Williams Abrams Jr
He was then Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1972 until his death in 1974
That's were the Abram tanks got their name

You can see Fury and Tiger 131 which is the only working tiger in the world (The Tiger used in the film) in the Bovington Tank Museum in the UK.
