Guppy Fish Care: 10 Things You Should Know About Guppies

Here are the 10 things listed in this video:

1: Feed a varied diet
I recommend feeding a variety of different live, frozen and commercial foods to your guppies to give them the best health and color possible.

2: Inbreeding ramifications
Because guppies have been domestically bred for decades, the genes of these fish are often very frail and can result in many fish having bent spines and poor immune systems. It is important to buy your guppies from a breeder who has done a great job mixing blood-lines to create a more hardy fish.

3: Tank mates
Guppies are an awesome community fish, so it isn't really a case of whether guppies will attack other fish, it's more about whether other fish will attack your guppy.

4: Common diseases
Guppies commonly have issues with internal parasites so it is important to quarantine and medicate your fish upon adding them to a new aquarium.

5: Prolific breeding
Guppies are prolific breeders and give birth to about 30-50 fry at a time. They are livebearers and give birth to live young every 22-25 days.

6: Tank requirements
Guppies don't require a lot. I recommend keeping a heater and filter in your aquarium and housing them in at least a 10 gallon tank.

7: Keep live plants
Live plants help keep nasty chemicals that form in the aquarium down by using them to grow. So they can act as a natural "filter" in your aquarium.

8: Filtration
I recommend using sponge filters in your guppy aquariums to stop fry getting sucked up and killed.

9: Life-span
Guppies live about 1-3 years on average so it is normal to lose a guppy every now and then to old age.

10: Inspect the guppies like crazy before you buy
Make sure you buy the healthiest guppies possible from the store to make sure that you don't have any problems with sickness when you bring them home.

Thanks so much for watching!

Damn. This dude is so sweet. He’d buy sick guppies just to try and nurse them back to health 😭
Too good for this world.

I had goldfish. When I was a child.
Now I just want some simple fish and didn’t notice how complicated providing a proper environment was.
This video helped me a ton thank you!

My grandpa have some of the most hardy guppies, like really hardy that he keeps in his small indoor pond with no filter, no water circulation, no water changes and my cousin's giant red-eared slider. He's only been giving them plain bread for 30 years+ and they still keeps on thriving and breeding new generations, the only thing that they're mising is the colors, they have a full black body with a speck of color on their tail, some males will have a purple body, red fins and some spots on their tail but they're pretty rare, they're also very small and skinny unlike the domesticated guppies.

I had a guppy tank for 2 years. I tried to add different guppy’s from different places and they lived for a long time. They made babies like crazy! I was giving them away to friends and family and keeping some of my favorites. Buy by the 2 year mark I noticed some of them were starting to have bent spines and wired looking belly’s. I scrapped the whole tank. Had a friend take all the mails and gave all the females to a local pet shop.

Interesting you mentioned buying sick guppies. I had the same thought process (I need to save them!) but the store had a policy of not selling sick or weak fish as they are liable for refunding you if it dies or makes the other fish in you tank ill, as the communication of "I want that fish because it looks ill" is the store admitting to selling you a faulty product. It made sense.

Thanks for the tips. My brother used to buy sick hamsters and try to take care of them, which also would never end well. Sending you positive vibes for caring for animals! 🙂

laughed at how hard you had to think about what the temperatures were in fahrenheit because I can absolutely relate. I am never going to understand what a fahrenheit is.

Oh they’re hardy alright. My boyfriend brought home some baby guppies given to him. I thought why in the hell... had no idea what to do with them. So I kept them in Tupperware. It’s been a week and they were fed once (no filter or anything so fed once to minimize potential harmful bacteria) - still alive. They have just been upgraded to a 10g aquarium. Currently acclimating. Fingers crossed
