The surprising reason why samurais always carried two swords! Explained by a katana sword trainee

During the war eras, two katana swords, one long and one short, were used for different situations in battle.
In the peaceful Edo period, carrying two katana swords was a law that the samurai had to follow as a symbol of their authority.

The culture of carrying two katana swords started from the time samurai were fighting duels on horseback during the Heian period (794~1185).
They carried one longer katana and one shorter katana for close combat.

Coming into the peaceful Edo period (1603~1868) there were no more wars, but the shogunate (samurai administration) defined by law that samurai must carry two swords (uchi-katana & wakizashi), as a part of the policy to clearly divide the people by their social classes.

The samurai always had the shorter wakizashi on them, but the longer uchi-katana
was only on their waist when they walked outside.

I'm actually fascinated that craftsmen and merchants are lower on social scale than peasants. That was not the case in europe since merchants could have more money, and craftsmen was praised for ther talents and skills. Peasant could be virtualy anyone who have a peace of land to work on.

Japan’s history is like a fiction story, it’s awesome, especially sengoku jidai

I like it, this shorter format! I mean, I like the full length videos, too, but this is a nice addition

Tbh the thing that fascinates me most is that peasants were second class, above merchants and even craftsmen. I can understand the merchants, but craftmens amazes me

Knew this in 'Kenshi' lmao. Basically a long katana for an aggressive character, and a wakizashi for indoor fights to avoid -10 attack penalty.

It’s always faster switching to your second sword than reloading your first one.

I learned that the smaller katanas we're called wakizash from a videogame called dead island

I'm guessing it was a sign of their status, and if they had to surrender the long sword to enter a building they would retain the wakazashi for personal defense in tight spaces.
Bonus - Miyamoto Musashi believed in always practicing with and wielding full length Katanas "broadly" even in tight quarters.

I would be glad if Shogo could make a video on Myamoto Musashi. Was he, in fact, the greatest samurai in History?

i thought it was like a Panic Knife.
So when you acidently drop your katana or your opponent grab your katana you just pull out the second one

The conclusions first thing is just so nice of you. Even though I'm going to watch the full vid anyways.

If you compare it to modern time, it's like carrying a Rifle and a pistol

I heard that samurais preferred to just use the wazikashi because it was small and easier to use. Forgot where heard it from but def here in youtube

I like the new shorts from time to time. But fun fact during the Sengkou Jidai and before it, themain weapon for Smaurai and Ashigaru was the Yari spear and Naginata pull arm. And obviously firearms once they arrived. Not so much Katana or NoDachi as people say

So is the smallest 3rd weapon called a tanto? I thought it was but I also know it to be a blade or tip shape. I carry a knife everywhere I go at all times and have collected for almost 30 years. I prefer a "tanto" style blade and you can break "Tanto point" down to many styles with reverse tanto American tanto and so on. Just more info on that would be interesting for me. I just found this channel so info is appreciated! Thanks everyone.

I was told that a long sword was for battle, and once you walked into a building you had to give your long sword to a person to hold until you come back out, as the ruler was the only one who was allowed to have both in his home. So you’d be stuck with a short one.
