How Different Are Ninja and Samurai Katana? #Shorts

●Ninja Swords Didn't Actually Exist?

Some ninja clans are believed to have used ninja swords, and these swords have many differences compared to the katana used by samurai.

1. Different purpose and usage
2. Different form (curve/length)
3. Different Tsuba (ring) and Saya (sheath)

For the samurai, the katana was a weapon they used in battle and was also a symbol of their authority. For the ninja on the other hand, their swords were more of a convenient tool to carry around on their missions as spies.

This is why ninja swords are much shorter (about 60cm/ in) and are not curved. This shape was to make it easier to carry around and make it more effective with stabbing which ninja would have done more than slashing.

Unlike the samurai katana that have gorgeous decorations to represent power, the Tsuba/Saya of the ninja swords are matted to avoid reflecting light. The Tsuba are big and square shaped to be used as a step, and the tip of the Saya is pointy so it becomes stable when it’s stood on.

The pointy end can be removed to be used as a small medicine pouch, and the Saya can be used as a snorkel and an item to listen to sounds across walls.

It blows my mind that the people waaaay back then were so innovative and figured out how to make it have so many more uses

Did the average Japanese citizen know or care about ninja at the time? It seems contradictory to the honor culture of the samurai.

This reminds me, I’d actually be interested in hearing your take on some of the cultural aspects of samurai displayed in games like Ghost of Tsushima and how close that would be to what they were historically known to be like. Always cool to see how historically/culturally accurate games like these actually are.

I've read several sources that says these straight ninja swords did not in fact exist, as no archaelogical evidence can prove it, nor written sources. any historical sources saying otherwise would be interesting to hear about.

Ninja: my sword is a tool of convenience.

Samurai: this is what happens when you bring a tool to a swordfight.

From what I've heard, all of the Shinobi that we know of in history were also samurai. Samurai we all know is a class and Shinobi is a profession; it was more Espionage, then it was trained assassins

It's amazing how many different uses the Ninja swords had. When I heard tales of ninjas climbing up walls and saw Ninja Kirby blow water out of a snorkel, I would've never thought that all of those abilities were just additional functionality that the swords had!

Also, thank you for your entertaining and informative videos! I'm learning a lot more than I ever would've otherwise.

I was 😨-ing for the whole video.

Like... the functions in each part of the Ninja sword... their shape, coloring & all... wow.

And when you mentioned "Some ninja clans" my mind went "Hanzo, Fujibayashi, Sarutobi, Iga, Koka, Hojo"

...waaahh! The excitement 😣

Thank you so much for this precious information! I learned a lot!

Certain areas were known for their ninja origins. For example, the Iga Ninja. My Japanese history instructor for my college entrance exam was a descendant of the Iga Ninja.

My OC in one of my stories uses a Ninjatō as his main weapon, though his blade is much longer and thicker than a normal Ninjatō, and it's sharper as well.

This actually genuinely is helpful for me since me and a friend have OCs that involve Ninja and Samurai's (especially the weapons 😭💖)
