But she really isn’t. She spent years working on this older starfleet ship, trying to repair it and becoming familiar with it.

Scotty hadn’t worked on a “barely just starfleet” ship, so he wasn’t quite so familiar.

The most surprising thing here is yorktown had not only defensive weaponry, but entire arrays of defensive platforms both surrounding it and on the surface. It could probably deal with any single or even multiple attacking ships that werent the swarm.
