Getting diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) is a shock to every patient. Patients receive their diagnosis after a clinical examination, not based on a lab test or on imaging results. In this video, Dr. Matthew Stern explains to a newly diagnosed PD patient what variables he considers in a PD diagnosis. He also explains the role of dopamine imaging (a DAT scan) in the diagnosis of parkinsonian syndromes using advanced imaging technology. In the second half of the video, Dr. Stern discusses the prognosis of a newly diagnosed patient, emphasizing that PD is a very heterogeneous condition with most patients living full and active lives for many years.

At stage five you should have the option to take the medicine that puts you to sleep forever. All states should offer this..Parkinson’s is a nightmare in later stages. There is no hope at this point. At stage five, your life is over. There is nothing they can do.

'Minimal impact on your life'
'Close to normal life'

After diagnisis 5 years ago, I am in much better shape than the interviewer, such that i look healthy, but i cant climb stairs without exhausting myself, cant ride a bike safely due to my inability to pedal properly, cant swim faster than little children in a swimming class, cant deadlift or row more than 60 lbs, cant open a bag of chips, cant do high intensity exercise as it triggers dystonia, cant think straight till i take meds, cant junp without making my weak leg buckle, got tenditis in both elbows due to unnatural posture while exercising, cant walk farther than a couple kilometers before exhaustion, cant type properly because one hand is faster than the other, cant write in a straight line, cant sleep properly, etc etc etc. What on earth is minimal? Im in amazing shape but literally everything from my job to my exercise to my life goals and relationships are all affected severely. Every day i wake up and have to check whats working and not working, because my dystonia, unnoticeable to the naked eye, twists my body up, and i sprain a knee or hip or back several times per week, which of course makes exercise and physical therapy impossible to do regularly. I have sprained my knee while stretching out in bed, my back while sneezing, my neck from turning suddenly, etc etc etc.

Pd is my life and every decision or expenditure or relationship must start with pd prognosis and possible complications caused by the new decisions.
