Phil Jones was a very promising youngster. Nobody batted an eye when United paid £18m for him. He was great in defensive duels and even had an eye for a pass. Ferguson played him in midfield and right back many times, most notably against Real Madrid alongside Ryan Giggs. If you watch old highlights, you'll see Jones passing and moving very well in midfield. I don't know what caused him to be how he is. Maybe injuries, bad management or just Fergie's magical touch that took a lot of players from mediocre to title winning material and back to mediocre once he left.

When he signed from Blackburn and got in the first team he was a hell of a player. SAF said what he said because of what he saw that season. Bobby Charlton once said he reminded him of Duncan Edwards. These statements from two of the top names in football history are based on the fact Phil Jones was un unbelievable talent. But injuries have destroyed him. Very sad.

Jones was actually a decent talent during SAF era, that he had potential to replace Ferdinand or Vidic when they retired.

The problem was SAF retired. The new managers lack trust on talent development. That's why some talents went down the hill, including young Phil Jones
