Lawrence: President who? Who will really do the job? RFK? Musk?

Trump said nothing about policy in his first interview since the election, revealing he’s not a president who is “eager to get to work.” MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell considers who might really be president behind the scenes when Donald Trump, in effect, “hands over the job to someone else or to a few people and does nothing?”

I am exhausted by Americans claiming that the economy was their reason for choosing Trump. When people talk about economic issues like gas prices, grocery costs, and other retail items, they often mistakenly blame the federal government, which doesn’t control these prices. Gas prices are influenced by oil cartels, while the prices of groceries and other goods are set by the corporations that produce them, like Nabisco, Heinz, and Sara Lee. These companies determine prices, not the federal government. The government’s role is only to regulate the safety and quality of items we find in stores.

The ongoing blame toward Biden's administration for high prices is misplaced. Yes, inflation has been challenging, but it’s currently around 2%, lower than it was in the 1970s, when inflation was so high that people struggled to afford basic goods. While grocery and gas prices are indeed high, the anger is being directed at the wrong people. Instead of holding the companies that produce and distribute these essentials accountable, people are blaming the government, which doesn’t control these prices.

I wish news outlets, commentators, and podcasters would clarify this distinction so people better understand that when we talk about the economy from a government perspective, that’s one thing, but when it comes to food, gas, and other essentials, those prices are not government-regulated. This failure to separate the two is a failure of the media. Greed is driving prices up—wealthy executives and corporations raising prices to increase profits. But no one is speaking to that, and it needs to be discussed more openly.

I also disagree with these focus groups talking about the economy as if it’s the sole reason people voted against a woman president. I believe that, unfortunately, many Americans simply weren’t ready to elect a woman, let alone a Black woman. It’s sad to see the country in this state, unaware of the impact of these choices. As an MSNBC commentator recently put it: "Keep messing around, and you’ll see what you’re going to get." Unfortunately, that’s where America is headed.

His goal was to stay out of jail, then make as much money off us as possible.

I admire how objective, collected and calm you are, and how you are able to convey this to your viewers. It really feels more like a case of hope for the best, but prepare for the worse.
