Shell is a 17-year-old woman who lives and works at a petrol station in the desolate Scottish Highlands. Apart from the occasional customers who call by for fuel, and a few regulars who acknowledge and catch up with her, Shell's only company is her reserved and softly spoken father Pete (Joseph Mawle), to whom she is devoted. A young girl trying to find her place in the world, she is on the cusp of womanhood, struggling to re-imagine her role within her own family and life in general. Pete, meanwhile, is damaged goods. He still keenly feels the absence of his wife, who ran away when Shell was four, while his connection with his daughter is both difficult and disturbing.

An assured debut feature starring Joseph Mawle and newcomer Chloe Pirrie, Shell marks the arrival of Scottish writer-director Scott Graham as a distinctive new voice in British cinema. Shell was nominated for three awards at the BFI London Film Festival, including the Best Newcomer award for lead Chloe Pirrie, who provides the film with its beating heart.

I loved this film. So representative of the Highlands, the metaphor of Shell and the baby deer so subtle I didn't even notice it the first time, and the acting is flawless

This film really captures the feeling of hopeless depression.

Just saw this movie on ARTE a french-german broadcast synchronised in the german language.
Even so it impressed me deeply.
If you're stuck in a static claustrophobic setting like this as a young girl, standing on the treshold of maturity, you can take only for so long.
She felt loyal to her father but refused after his suicide to step in a likewise situation with Adam.
Instinctly she made the decision to leave but having no clue for what or where.
It leaves us with the questionmark what the future will hold for
Fingerscrossed she meets the right

very strange film. full of emotion, lots of psychological twists and turns. But in a nutshell, it's a slow progress to the word "incest"

I love these movie! It captures the beauty of the Highlands. And it has sence of Hopeless and depression. The thing in these movie is The Father and Daughter spend a lifetime together since the girl is a kid. I notice the lack of bonding or closeness between the two specially the father. He seems to be an introvert to her.

This movie is horribly BORiNG!! There's no depth, there's nothing moving or inspiring. It makes you feel like it leading up to something, like answers or a twist. But it simply falls extremely flat, there's barley any dialogue, so I don't know how this had such good acting, according to the comments. Your left up to drawling your own conclusions.

The main actor does a ton of creepy awkward staring, and always looks so sad do to rejection from daddy. It's not like she doesn't have a way into town, of course every teen dreams of what the world is like in different places. But you can't base an entire movie on that alone, or some intense facial expressions. she never states that she can't wait to leave, or gives reasoning of why she stays. Her questions for every customer are basic and boring.

This whole incest infatuation with her dad, was just completely unnecessary, sickening and pointless. Because it became distracting and misconception to the moral of the story, they were trying to get across to the audience.

She had sex with a boy her own age when they took a little ride, and he would come to visit her. So where was the need to get attention like that from her father. Yes she was isolated, but not completely isolated. I'm not even going to discuss that pervert customers hug, because once again it made no sense and seemed like a filler than an actual scene.

Then there's a scene with a little girl that was a bit skin crawling. Because once again you're left up to your own theorys, and it's another filler moment. In one way it seemed like he was remembering Shell at that age, and his life with her mother. That he just missed her to much and was tired of the hold she had over him. Shell was his constant reminder of her mother and how she abandoned them both.

Then the second way it could go, is that he likes them young, almost like Shell has aged out and that's why he's no longer interested. Because of looking at the little girl with desire, he then gets angry with himself for being so sickening, so he bashes his head on the wall a few times, in shame. Then he decides to kill his self for everything he's done, due to all the guilt that was eating him alive. From somewhere because there's literally a 22 minute scene. Of her mother and father laying in bed, apparently he thought she left him. She's says she not going anywhere and she happy, they trade I love you's, and the he said both him and Shell need her in their lives. That's all you get, and that's suppose to explain his choice of suicide.

First he wakes from that dream I mentioned above then supposedly thinks she's the mother, and rolls over to make out with his daughter. Then apologizes, once he wakes that it was completely a mistake. but it was weird when she was trying to get him off of her, when that's what she's been wanting from him, the whole got damn movie. She even got pissed at herself for having sex with that guy. I mean the dad had a few seizures. So it could be a reason for her sticking around, maybe that's why the wife left. She didn't want to be his caregiver and gas station attendent, out in the middle of nowheresville. But who knows, because there sure isn't any answers or reasons why.

Then as she sleeps he looks her body down and stopped to stare at her bare legs, then goes out to kill himself. People are giving this movie far to much credit, there was barely any acting. Besides sicko touching, awkward uncomfortable staring, and your basic making small talk conversation with customers. Stop making more out of something that just didn't deliver.

It was confusing because nothing was ever really explained, or had enough there to build a story. Why would she be sticking around for him, when he barely paid any attention to her, and made it clear he didn't need or want her, hence the suicide. Then she makes a really great decision at the end. Just because she didn't want her dad's same exact life. So she to get into a 18wheeler with a stranger danger person and hopes for the best. She had no money, no clothes nothing, all she had to do was sell it, and then start a new life.

Trust me all that I've said, is the movie, you don't have to even watch it. I just thought I'd save people some time and edited two hours of nothing ness, into a 3min comment read. I'd would rather sit and watch my kitchen sink faucet drip for 2hrs, than to ever watch that movie again.
