I declutter and then keep adding new clothes, shoes and accessories :) and then I am back to clutter again, never ending cycle.

Great tips. The only one I quibble with is the 1 year rule for special occasion items. I’d rather hold on to a few of those for when the inevitable event comes up rather than buy new each time. And yes, I have worn the same silver dress to various events over the past few years changing up the accessories and my hair and voila! It’s a new look. And it’s a different event, so, no matter it’s the same dress.

I do all of these except one. All of my clothes are neutral and classic styles so if I don’t wear them this year they’ll be fine next year too. But also - take time to iron anything that needs ironing and mend anything that needs mending that you can do. Or have it done professionally. It is a rare occasion that you find me ironing five minutes before I need to leave, but I have had a closet full with nothing to wear because everything needed ironing. A good movie, a good iron, a good ironing board and away we go.

All excellent tips, many of which I’ve already incorporated into my own closet and declutter routines. It takes more than just one day sometimes, but part of my process is to put on a single item, e.g. a sleeveless green shell, then put on different skirts, sweater, shirts, and pants to see how many different outfits I can make with it. I write down the ones that really work, and if it’s fewer than three, and I don’t really LOVE the item, out it goes. (One day I’ll cross-reference everything, ha ha!). Then I experiment with various shoes, accessories, scarves, and so on. Although I’m only part way through this process, it has really helped me to know that yes, I do have something to wear. I also practice the “one new item in, at least one (sometimes two) out” approach.

I buy 90% of my clothes at a favorite resale store. As I have gotten older I get overwhelmed easily going into a large department store. And because I pay so little I can easily let things go. I ALWAYS am complimented on my clothes as this shop has very high quality merch with a focus of moving it out the door. However, you must know your style. I know the brands I can wear, Talbots, J Crew, Gap, Ann Taylor. I really enjoy looking at your outfits as it gives me ideas how to mix and match. Thank you!

I remember going to the supermarket after our two years on Guam (and being in the Navy we had the Navy exchange & commissary so we had more choices than most). My mother couldn’t get over my reaction to the abundance. Until you experience it, you don’t know!

Such timely advice for me! We are planning on putting all of our things in storage and travel the world for a year, living out of one carry on bag each. My large closet is empty as we paint the walls and it is time to severely purge my clothing. I play the "what if" game too much and you have encouraged me to get over that. Thank You!

(I'm the person who asked you where you got that beautiful leopard print blouse you were wearing in a video i watched yesterday and you replied that you have had it for a number of years.... WELL, I found a blouse that looked identical to yours at Chicos and it is not on its way to me!!!!) I am a minimalist and my husband and I are diligent about repurposing those things in our lives that no longer serve us. I just now went through my closet and pulled out anything that I no longer wear. I have a bad back and mule style shoes make my back hurt so I put the 4 pairs i have into the donate pile along with several higher heeled summer sandals that I did not wear once this summer. I am ruthless in my purging and I am donating a couple of pairs of pants that had tags on them because I was never motivated to wear them even once. This exercise led me to inventory what I have for fall/winter and I am all set. Other than the leopard print blouse and two sweater-coats I have coming from Amazon, I do not need to add one more item to my wardrobe. This is saving me money (and taught me to not purchase pants that I won't wear LOL). Thank you for all of your great content (I have been a long time viewer and I JUST subscribed. I will be 63 in November and have the same preppy vibe as you. There was absolutely no excuse for me not being a subscriber.

Always a great reminder to declutter closets. I'm finding that uniform hangers work well. I love the acrylic shelf dividers. I've been using them for years. Woven baskets look great but hide the contents...even when labeled. Then I forget about the items and don't use them. Personally, acrlic stackables keep me more organized. Enjoy your videos!

I organize by trying on the clothes and putting outfits together, donate bag, or trash bag.
I categorize: One side of my closet is Staying Home the other side Going Out.
I wish I had your beautiful closet!!!
