A data breach is an incident wherein information is stolen or taken from a system without the knowledge or authorization of the system's owner. Do not think that it is the same as a data leak since that is when someone exposes confidential and sensitive data to unauthorized third parties.

A data breach, on the other hand, happens as a consequence of a cyberattack. On the other hand, data leaks happen due to poor cybersecurity practices or accidental individual actions. Data breaches happen due to hacking attempts on company databases by cyber-criminals.
