Notice how ALL of the responsibility is on the citizen/victim. Gotta love it

When the Social Security Administration began, the SSN cards were marked "For Social Security and Tax Purposes Only — Not for Identification." Our government failed to meet its promise to protect the numbers by allowing them to be used by private businesses everywhere.

Right.. I'm going to enter more information about myself to check what information is already on the internet.
I want my government to take responsibility and take care of the problem.... it their fault.

A federal law needs to be passed asap that no longer allow companies to use SS as identification

Its ridiculous that the most important thing linked to a person's financial status is regularly stolen from trusted and mandatory agencies.

With how widespread this is, it's a national emergency at this point.

Why should I pay federal and si taxes if the federal government hasn’t protected me. Why do I have to pay more money to protect myself against the failure of government??!!!

One thing can always be guaranteed no matter where in the world you live: Government Incompetence.

Why bother with ANY of those measures?
If any institution allows any account to be opened using just your name, DOB, address and SSN, then they are breaking the law now since it's PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE that those pieces of information are out there.

What’s the point of me trying to protect it and be preventive when it’s the government that fails to protect what’s ours like they’re suppose to. Who’s accountable?

If you're a place of business or a government entity that holds sensitive customer/citizen information, and that information is compromised, we should stop treating them as victims.
I say at this point, with so much of this happening nearly every month it seems like, they should be CHARGED for negligence and incompetence for being unable to keep our information safe.
We can't keep letting these incidents go, and these poeple just raise their hands in the air and say sorry, with some worthless 1 month code to some credit monitoring website, as if that's gonna help.
They should DO THEIR PART to keep sensitive information safe.

This country really needs to rethink how it handles personal identity security.

SS admin should put up a site where we can all go for free and see if our #'s were breached.

In 2002 and again in 2003 I got letters from the Department Of Defense stating my personal and service records including full name, birthdate and SS number were in or on stolen laptops, Twice! The Government is Never here to help.
