To be fair, that third?/second wife he took and who saved him after the trial of seven was a well know sorceress of pentos who also served as his spymaster. She was rumored to use spiders and bugs as her eyes and ears. Basically bloodraven 1.0, and most of maegor's really cruel stuff started he married her.

Maegor has alot in common with Caligula, initially he was a decent leader, if often shortsighted, but after an accident (an unknown illness for Caligula and severe head trauma for Maegor) they changed and became among the most cruel leaders their nations ever say, and both were killed because their assassins didn't want to die.

There’s theories that Visenya used blood magic to conceive Maegor. Because Aegon hardly ever slept with Visenya, and she happened to get pregnant shortly after the council started suggesting Aegon marry again to have more children to secure the throne. And suggesting that Visenya was infertile. (I think the council was suggesting more children because Aenys was weak af and they thought he wouldn’t live to adulthood.)

So it’s theorized that Maegor was conceived with blood magic, and that’s why he was infertile. (It’s largely suggested Maegor was barren, cuz he had three wives, two of which got pregnant like once and never carried to term.) and after Maegor was injured, his third wife was a friend of Visenya, and she “brought him back to life.” Potentially with dark magic, which may explain his worsened cruelty.

I’d argue killing his nephew is cruel for more than just the murder. Kinslaying is universally frowned upon in the world of Ice and Fire. It’s something not even Tywin Lannister, Aerys II or even Roose Bolton have done. It’s a taboo that once broke, casts a stain on someone forever.
