Charles the first was smart, you always send your stunt double in whenever there is a dangerous situation at hand.

Also fun fact: the King James Version of the Bible, commissioned by James I (of witch-hunting fame), had translators specifically avoid using the word "Tyrant, " allegedly replacing it instead with such less monarchy-critical words as "Oppressor" or "Troubling."

James I even wrote a book about witches and witch-hunting called “Daemonologie”. While a good glimpse at the zeitgeist, it wasn’t quite as metal as I had originally thought it would be.

George I relied on his ministers as an interpreter between him and the rest of the government that it pretty much laid the groundwork for the prime minister system we see today

James wrote a book on witches. His interest in the subject inspired William Shakespeare to write MacBeth.

The only reason the Hanoverians became monarchs is because Queen Anne tragically lost all 17 of her children. The last of them to die was her heir, and he sadly died at 11 years old. The Hanoverians were descended from the Stuart's through Margaret Tudor, Henry VIII's older sister.

When Mary of Modena (1658-1718), married James, Duke of York (1633-1701) in 1673, she was only fifteen and the duke forty. She was not his first choice complaining that she was an ugly redhead.

proxy marriages were actually pretty common! marriages were usually important political alliances (which you wanted to solidify ASAP), but some brides were too young to leave their family’s court at the time of the marriage, and even if they were old enough, travel times were very long. proxy marriages meant you could seal the alliance immediately.

You know a marriage is going just swell when the wife cannot look at the guy without bawling her eyes out

I love how they all look like they have a severe case of depression on their portraits.

Imagine if England and the Netherlands merged because of William of Orange.

James the first was waiting for his new bride to come over from Denmark but she kept being delayed by the weather. When she arrived she convinced her new husband that witches had put a spell on her ship trying to keep them apart. He had had nothing to do with Witch Trials before she got there and kind of talked him into it.
