I chase # of shares and yield. This is what makes me more money.

Of course, you are 100% correct but it is nerve wracking when you see the stock market go down so much. Look at last year 2022 and now this year also very disturbing when you see your balance going down continuously.

I think it's a timing concern. For example, i bought ORC, SPFF, and SDIV. My ORC is down 50%, SPFF down 23%, SDIV down 42%., bringing me a current loss of $600. They are set to drip but i'm uncertain the stock prices will ever recover. It's been an education about what not to do. I bought them because they were cheap but i didn't pay attention to 52 week highs. I'd have learned nothing if I hadn't started.

Yeah I agree. As long as the stock doesn’t start cutting divs I don’t really care where the price goes. Historically stocks appreciate, so by the time I use divs in my retirement, die and pass my portfolio off to my children I won’t care anyway and my kids will have a solid foundation to build on if they choose to

I think it might be insightful to make a video to generalize when is a good time to buy a dividend stock and when you should wait, and conversely if you should sell and why you should sell.

Some time price of the stock is a good indicator of a dividen cut. Look at INTC and NLY.

Preach 🙌🏼 (The only thing that matters is a quality company that will grow the dividend, not necessarily the share price.)

I continue to appreciate your content - that you for all the effort to do so. I love this topic. Good reminder. However, with regard to you stock picks, I wonder if they are truly comparable (the ole apples to apples reference). Their is a large difference in the stock prices (currently ~ $152, $140 and $25) - this impacts the # of shares one can buy in at and purchase via Dividend reinvestment. Also, the dividend yield (%) of the 3 stocks varies (~3%, 1.6% and 7.8%). If I were going to make this case, I would pick EPD vs WMT and JNJ. I really love this comparison - I would just like to see 3 more “similar” stocks. Sorry to be Debbie Downer (not my normal). Keep up with the excellent content Avg Joe!!

What if QYLD ends up being like stock #3 ?

This was an counter intuitive lesson I had to learn. It's had to ignore the price changes even though it has no effect on my day to day life now that I'm retired. I just have to be concerned more if companies cut the dividends.

I agree but for a slightly different reason - my stock portfolio is losing value ... ... down about 18% so far; but the dividend income has gone up to almost $1500 a month from around 1100/1200. So the value of the portfolio is irrelevant as long as the dividend payout remains the same or better for my comfort!!
(Everything in my 250K portfolio is either dripped or re-invested into the better dividend paying stocks and etfs.)

So as a rule of thumb, choose dividend aristocrats with higher dividends and sit back? ZIM for example has very high dividends but is a young company. Had you purchased Mar/Apr 22 you would be very concerned about the share price

Being near retirement I guess if your just taking out dividends at retirement it does not matter as much maybe. Do you have a video of someone getting closer to retirement age?

This is a good perspective to consider. I also own some EPD and i do like the income, but the taxes are complicated and over 15 years might have significant impact on the returns you outline. I got my K1 late from them and i think i might use a lot of the income it generated to pay my CPA for extra work.

What stocks are you loading up on with the recent dip?

I don’t think any of these are available from the U.K.
At least not in my platform…
