My mother died at the age of 67 from sepsis from lymphedema complications. If your skin is weeping don’t ignore it and try to treat at home. See a wound care doctor right away. While it’s very important to keep the skin clean and moisturized other issues can be the cause of the swelling like veinous insufficiency or peripheral artery disease. I love Bob and Brad, and Mike and this video has great info but if you are googling help for this issue, please don’t wait. Go see a doctor to rule out any bigger issues.

Thanks for this! I was wondering why the doctors made a big deal out of the dry, flaky skin on my leg, but no one has ever explained that it could be an opening for infection! Now I'm going to work at keeping them moisturized. I appreciate you.

When I was a truck driver, my leg would swell to the size of my jeans. Clear liquid would drip down my ankle, and would soak through my jeans. I had an ulcerated? open wound for years. Doctors tried horse wraps and other things that would not work. They would say they don't know what to do. Eventually I found a physical therapist who knew of a wet wrap that would dry on my leg before it started to expand. The wrap did not allow my leg to expand, and the wound was able to heal. Nowadays with the internet, I find people Dr. etc. currently have understanding and know what to do. Thank you for spreading the word about those infections, and how they occur.

I'm 60. I've been battling lymphedema in my legs for over 20 yrs now. I worked retail, customer service. On my feet all day long. Go, go, go. Swollen legs, ankles and feet. PAIN! I was going without a doctor. Just going to the local emergency room when the CELLULITIS hit. Leakage? Oh, cry me several great lakes!
Part of the problem is that most doctors don't know what lymphedema is, what the dangers are. Or how to tell a patient how to cope.
I had to quit working in my early 40s, because I couldn't manage the pain and cellulitis attacks any more. I was on welfare for years. I finally got on disability. It's been a terrible grind.
For just over 2 years now I have been fighting horrific open wounds all around my lower legs. Pain? My mind has been shredded, I've considered suicide. It's been that bad. I've spent the last year in a rehab hospital bed, trying to heal. I haven't walked in a year. I've lost over 50 pounds.
If you think that your legs, ankles and feet have been swelling a lot, PLEASE get some medical help. You don't want to live my life.

Today at work I had the opening jingle for your videos in my head for some reason, & I was humming it (a bad habit of mine). One of my colleagues exclaimed "Bob & Brad!", to which I replied "Yes!" & then we had a chat about how awesome you three guys are, so I thought I'd let you know that you're pretty famous even here in a little office in NZ!

My husband had this mixed in with cancer issues. The cellulitis led to Sepsis. Three long weeks in the hospital. Please be very careful.Great advice here.

I have COPD and type 2 diabetes. My feet swelled up like balloons and turned purple! Led to the diabets diagnosis and meds. The discoloration was caused by low o2 absorbtion. Now, on oxygen, too. My feet are almost back to normal. Took a year to get this under control. If you have these conditions do not ignore your feet. I have mine checked everytime I see the Doctor.

Oops! I hit send before I finished my comment! As I was saying, I was prescribed Amlodipine for high blood pressure (I also take another med for high b/p), and had been taking it since Oct. of last year, and I hadn’t had a problem with my feet swelling until a few days ago. Right before bedtime, my feet felt “tight”, so I looked at them and was shocked at how swollen they looked! So, I did some tippy toe exercises and then elevated my feet and the swelling went down somewhat. My doctor did tell me that swollen ankles and gums could be possible side effects when he prescribed this med. What surprised me was I didn’t have any symptoms before this. Well, I was finally able to speak with the doctor today and he said the foot swelling can happen at any time, even a year later without any incidents of foot swelling up until then! So, I am now off that med, and he said the swelling should clear up completely in about two weeks. I don’t have a heart condition either, I just went through extensive testing recently and the cardiologist said I have a healthy heart. The reason I mentioned this medication and it’s possible side effects, is because we all have to be aware of the side effects of meds prescribed to us. Thank you for informing us of the importance of hydrating our skin, in order to prevent bacteria from getting in through the cracks. I moisturize, however, I wasn’t aware of that danger! Thank you once again!

It's so good when you speak about personal experiences because it really increases the applicability of your suggestions. It might seem odd for you to speak about your mom, but you can let her know that by sharing her issues and the treatment that it makes people like me trust that the advice will be relevant. And is actually a strong emotional and psychological relief. Thank you.

Thank you so much!!! We have been trying to figure out what to do. The doctor just keeps telling us to put compression socks on my 93 year old mom. It will NOT work. The picture looks just like her foot. I will take a picture today and begin treatment. Keep you posted. So grateful for your videos! Have used them more than a few times!

Easy way to don Compression socks w/ the toe, put your hand in it until your fingers are down by the toes of the sock, unroll the sock down your arm until just about the heel. The calve part of the sock should be dangling not all bunched up. Put the foot in the foot portion of the unrolled sock and properly align. Grab the elastic top of the sock and pull up the leg. Should be on! Also can hand wash w/ antibacterial soap after work hung up and typically dry before next shift. I used to work 12hr shifts back to back and this is what I did.

I am diabetic. Just spent 8 days in the hospital and 3 weeks in rehab. I get weeping skin from edema this time the skin was infected to the point of sepsis I was delirious lost speech couldn't remember the simplicity of questions asked could not walk, awful pain. Now I am living with calamine lotion in what they call an unaboot. Doing better, rolling walker now helps. Take care of your skin and if you're diabetic see a podiatrist.

Bob was my favorite for his simplicity and just for being himself. He should come over and just be there, no words required.

As a wound care nurse that treats patients at home this is such a frustrating diagnosis. With keeping feet and legs moisturized and dry please tell them to keep legs elevated when sitting. The doctor will recommend to watch their
salt and sugar intake.
Listening to doctors directions and following them is the ONLY way they will heal and stay healed.
Problem is most of these patients don't listen yet think it is the doctors reason they aren't better.

My lower legs have always been very large, but there is no swelling in my feet, and I overall am considered thin. Dr's have not diagnosed it, but they notice it. I think I have Lipedema. I am athletic, and have at times, purposely lost weight to see if lower limbs would get smaller; nothing!
Thank you for addressing edema!

Thanks for the information. It is rather amusing that you keep saying to go to the doctor; they will know what the problem is and what to do. No, they don't. My whole life, I have had to diagnose any problem I have had and tell the doctor what it is, and I usually have to suggest what I'd like them to do in a polite way, so they don't refuse. The only area I've been able to rely on doctors for is the eye, eye specialists.

Tip for applying compression stockings: Sprinkle a little talcum powder on the foot and spread evenly, roll the sock from the top/ cuff down to the toe/end, forming a doughnut appearance. Place the rolled sock at your toes and “unroll” the sock onto your foot, keep unrolling until the sock is on, if any adjustments are needed, lightly dampen your fingers and pull the sock into place.
