I'm in vet school and to anyone hesitating, let me tell you that it's awesome. What's most awesome aren't the classes, it's the opportunities you get to learn via school clubs and hands-on labs. If you get in, be involved! It will truly make your experience so much more worthwhile.

When my cat died because her kitten got stuck and we couldn't get a veterinarian to help. She meant alot to me and I feel like other people shouldn't go through the same pain of losing a pet in a painful way.

I don't understand the educational system. So... 4 years in high school, 4 years of college and more 4 years of vet school? And college is where do you choose what to major and after that you can go to vet school? It's sooo different from our system. I'm in vet school too. But here, in Romania, we have 4 years of highschool in which we major at something and after that 6 years of vet school.

Vet techs don’t get paid much for all the work they do 💔

I’m a current first year veterinary student in the states. I’m very much thinking that this might not be the right field for me sadly. It’s a hard pill to swallow that you do so much work and get paid a portion of what a medical doctor would. Obviously, you don’t do this for the pay, but so many vets come out with such high debt, that it becomes a very real and important issue. That aside, I really recommend anyone who is thinking of pursuing this field to work (not just shadow) in a gp clinic for at least a year. Really ask yourself if this is what you see yourself doing. Vets have a lot of paper work on top of calls on top of meds to fill on top of managing staff (if you’re a business owner). I have found that everything that you really have to do as a vet can suck all the drive and purpose out of it when it gets bad enough :( I don’t know what to do honestly. I’m looking into dental school right now but it’s just sad because I thought this was what I was going to want to do. I thought I’d share that with people.

i've thought a lot about being a vet, and i worked at a vet office for about 9 months and the vets working there didn't seem happy about their job at all and it was kinda sad.. i've also thought about becoming a plastic surgeon.

too bad i'm struggling with math and science..

Very true! I think people's perceptions of what a vet is can sometimes be a tad off. I'm a third year vet student from NZ :) Also our vet school works a bit different to yours. I went straight from high school and got into vet school after 6 months of 'pre-vet'

I'm considering transferring over from medical school (my first year) into vet school, because no matter how much I find human medicine to be interesting, challenging, and necessary, my heart always seems to draw me back to the animals. Any advice?

I work at a dog daycare/boarding facility right now and I absolutely love it and it has solidified that I want to do something with animals the rest of my life. I'm worried vet school is too hard for me though. I have a horrible memory and I can't possibly imagine myself doing surgery on an animal and memorizing all kinds of anatomy, medications, diseases, etc. On top of it.

I am currently in undergrad for Animal Science and I’m going into my sophomore year with a 4.0 gpa. I am also currently working on a veterinary assistant internship at a shelter this summer to get hands on experience. I know I have a few more years to go before I apply but thinking about the future and the slim chances of getting accepted makes me nervous 😭

I'm 12, but I'm pretty much sure that I'm going to be a vet. Getting good grades is going to be my biggest prob. 😐 I am really scared of just failing; animals is pretty much the only thing I'm good at, and not being able to be a vet would really, really bring down.
There is a vet school a couple hours from where I live now, so I guess I lucked out on that!
My question is, what are the prerequisites you need, to get in? I live on a farm, and I work with our cattle a lot; have set a couple broken legs, and even sown up a calf's stomach with my dad and sis. I have three horses as well, and might specialize in equines.

Vet nurses can also do dental procedures such as cleaning and polishing teeth as well as record and monitor animals after anaesthetic and during recovery which during recovery is when they are most vulnerable. I aspire to become a vet nurse and work in my local practice☺️

Ever since I could remember, I've always been fascinated with the idea of curing animals. I was never squeamish around blood and I've always had good analytical skills. I've maintained my grades and am currently going to one of the best high schools in Florida. Technically, I can make it to vet school if I put enough effort. However, I have one question that can't be answered in books and, usually, online. I want to have a family someday and I want to continue pursuing my hobbies (flute playing and writing). If I become a veterinarian, how much of my social life/free time will I be giving up?
Don't get me wrong. I love animals and I'm a major geek when it comes to medicine/science, but I'm a family oriented person and I have life goals set outside of my professional life. So again, will I be able to spend time with my family and pursue my dream of being a vet?
