The i9-12900HK review is here where I can FINALLY talk about the Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake laptop performance, battery life and gaming framerates. A lot of gaming laptop performance is simply MIND BLOWING, especially the i9-12900HK vs Ryzen 9 5900HX competition. This is simply the best laptop CPU right now but its also hiding a dark secret that I NEED to talk about.

Since EVERYONE seems to be asking, here's our battery testing methogology which is designed from the ground up to focus on apples to apples comparisons. All the laptops are set at the exact same brightness level (200 nits), consumption is logged with the Battmon utility and a website (hardwarecanucks.com) is always refreshed on the same page to simulate web browsing. Also, we always use the Balanced Mode for testing since its the default setting on every laptop. Finally EVERY single laptop was retested for this review, with the latest drivers and updates. That's our methodology but I can't speak for the others. It could be they used the Super Battery Mode which would NOT make the results comparable to ours.

This is the 3rd review of the same laptop I saw this morning and yours is the only one that's honest about the laptop's problems. Good work, Hardware Canucks!

But FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS?!?! That's 4 apple pro stands! What the heck...

The thing I was most excited for when the early rumors were swirling about 12th gen intel cpus and their hybrid architecture was battery life. After Apple came out with M1 which was absolutely revolutionary in terms of battery life and heat output to performance, I was sure that Alder Lake was Intel's answer in the thin and light notebook territory, which is what I care about since I have a desktop for anything demanding. I am a bit concerned along with you at the battery life results for this one and am hoping that it isn't the same case for the U series processors.

Thanks for touching on battery life.

I been looking at replacing my 2019 Razer Blade 17 this year, and was waiting on the 12th gen laptops to hit in hopes of intel figuring their shit out with battery life. So far you guys and Dave2D have had these premium 12th gen laptops in and neither seem to have gotten any better than the last few generations. So looks like I'm going back to Apple.

I primarily use laptop for productivity tasks and have a couple of gaming PCs, so a gaming GPU isn't that important. Being able to fuck-off to a coffee shop and edit photos or hammer out some code without needing to jack in is a much bigger deal, and on my Blade 17 not only is that impossible because of battery life, but intel laptops seem to just run dog slow for even minor tasks when on battery. Like just working in VSCode for example becomes this laggy mess.

Great review as always, keep up the good work guys :)

The new GE76 battery life isn't as great as it's competitors, but at the same time the competitors' hardware aren't drawing as much power as that of GE76. There's nothing concerning about the battery life issue with the new Intel chip because comparing the 2022 model to 2021, the battery life has increased showing that it does run more efficiently than the previous year's model. Other reviewers have pretty much have shown this same result. Yes, it could possibly be other factors other than the new chip, but the only major difference between the 2022 and 2021 models is the new gen Intel.

Intel was lagging on top end power and Alder Lake fixes that but there’s no fixing the power hungry, heat generating issues - that comes with the territory with this tech. CPU power per watt charts vs AMD & Apple are going to make interesting reading once more brands have production examples out in the wild.

I have got no problem with cpu's running at 90°C if they aren't throttling and perform how they should perform.
I have got no problem with cpu's running at 99°C if they overperform

Thanks for this video, you forgot to compare the M1 of apple because for productivity the 2 are a choice and at this price tag you should include comparison when you can

Maybe check CPU wattage in those battery tests as well and compare it to other laptops and different CPUs in the same tasks. I bet this new Intel architecture is not very power-efficient and pulls more wattage than previous generations hence bad battery life.

Thank goodness for17 inch displays, separate number pads and tapered keys.

I can't wait for the u series chips to ship in laptops. Really hoping the battery life will rival the m1 chips

I think something is wrong with your unit, in ltt and dave 2d's review, the battery life is better

You forgot to mention the most important metric, fan noise. If it's above 39db it's pretty much useless

Was excited when I saw the performance numbers. Nothing AMD can match at the moment. But then I saw the power consumption. It's big, big no-no for me on a laptop. I'll be sticking with my 5800H for another 18 months. I'll probably go with Intel for a desktop upgrade though.

Nope! Intel is still dying.
Pushing more wattage and power is not going to cut it. The market now speaks to the direction Apple is heading. There is no point in having an Intel machine that is 70-80% of the performance of a desktop machine but costing 50-100% more AND have nearly non-existent battery life.
I don't see how these laptops can appeal to anyone except professional engineers and programmers who HAVE TO travel a lot. Even then it's a tough call tbh.

Would love to see a desktop setup included in these tests/benchmarks to have a refference fo those who dont know much about mobile chips... Great video

The battery life numbers match with anandtech. Pretty disappointed with the new CPU with “efficient “ cores.

I'm curious as the differences between your testing and Dave 2D...he got significantly better temp and battery life compared to last year's Raider.

I hope to see non gaming laptops more for everyday use pulling these kind of numbers. Nonetheless love the videos!
