Bass Soloing Made EASY (w/Gary Willis)!!

In this quick lesson, Gary Willis shares a killer pentatonic substitution trick to use over minor chords.

In this example, Gary improvises over a D minor chord while using the D minor pentatonic scale (root) and the A minor pentatonic scale (the 5th from the root).

Even though they are different scales, they accentuate different intervals and bring different colours to your phrases.

See you in the shed!!

Let's say the chord is Dmin (I). You can play (I) Dmin penta (1 b3 4 5 b7 of Dmin). You can play (V) Amin penta (1 2 4 5 b7 of Dmin). You can play Emin (ii) penta ( 1 2 4 5 6) of Dmin.

Saw Gary live in Tribal Tech Face First tour at a small intimate venue and I had NEVER heard of him or them before that. I was near hysterical after every song, one of greatest shows I've ever had the privilege of seeing. Being a bass player myself I had to met him after the show and he was the nicest dude, very approachable, told me about his days in the Dallas Philharmonic. Even gave me a CD!

I think the takeaway here is you don't have to only solo with the (I) chord if it's a vamp. Using the (ii°, III, iv, v, VI, VII) (in a minor key) chords will add good-sounding movement to your solo. And you can experiment with extensions like the 9th or 11th etc.

However, a tip from Victor Wooten is that if you're soloing over a progression, staying on the root chord can highlight your solo while the movement is done for you in the background.

My favorite of all time, and he's a nice, normal guy. I am not happy to report that I played doubles in tennis with him and Kurt Covington and we got our asses handed to us.

So basically play the 5minor pentatonic instead of the 1minor pentatonic eh?
