Years ago I had a girlfriend in her 20s that bought a new Corvette. She wanted me to use my life savings to buy a house for us while she used hers for the Corvette. I told her that was not fair and it was not good Christian stewardship. She really wanted to marry me and was very pushy about it, even though I had never proposed. I cancelled her wedding plans and got on with my life.
Over the years the Corvette continued to decline in value. The cost of maintenance, storage, insurance, and registration fees are an ongoing financial burden. I felt like I had dodged a bullet. That Corvette had saved me from marrying a materialistic spendthrift woman. Now I use the story of that Corvette in the Financial Peace classes that I teach at my church.

Got a feeling Dave Ramsey owns one of this cars as well so he knows what he is talking about. Even the caller got surprised at Dave's answer. But it makes sense to keep it

In this case, it is about what is meaningful to the caller. Personally, I would not working a second job to pay off a car. But, it is obviously worth it o this guy so go ahead and keep it.

To me, a car is just something that gets me from point A to point B. It’s much more meaningful to this guy so makes sense for him to shell out $17K more to keep the car.

I traded in my dream car last week. Had a 16 jeep wrangler. Ended up with a Kia Soul.

I rather keep my lifestyle "vegetarian restaurants, clothing, savings, and buy almost anything I want" than trade up my car.

Having that kind of car at that age is a bit much. Live a balanced lifestyle. Save and work hard for the future, but also reward yourself with one toy that doesn't have to make economic sense.
