I recently installed a new starter. The problem is the starter is free spinning. I've changed the battery terminals and installed a new battery. When I hooked up the new terminals to the battery. The starter is not engaging. What could be the problem.

I'm going onto my 3rd power master starter since the rebuild one month ago. Luckily Summit has been great in its return policy, and has continued to send me new ones, after they destroy themselves. O.K, Ford 400, new everything. Can make the measurement on the face to face clearance, which is over .100, which power master recommends, but how are you supposed to do the paper clip clearance measurement, when the entire pinion to flex plate area is completely covered by the tranny housing?? These starters works great for the first 10 or so starts, but then doesn't disengage and the engine spins the pinion until the death of the starter, a sound I've become very familiar with. Now, I've purchased a heat shield wrap, new 1 gauge wires, and a new Odyssey 950cca battery. I've never has so many problems with a starter install... Oh and when I put the old Ford OEM starter back in It works flawlessly. Oh well, Saturday is the big arrival of the 3rd starter, I hope this one works, because I love the gear reduction, and they just sound cool!... Any adviCe?
