SPIN FOREVER! Onyx Racing's Silent MTB Hubs

Onyx Racing hubs spin for SO LONG! This translates to the trail with a sense of free-speed and you'll find yourself coasting for longer.

There's ZERO noise, too. When you all you can hear is tires ripping into turns it's truly an awesome sensation. You start to pick up on things you wouldn't otherwise notice, like the sounds of your surroundings or that floppy cable you should probably address. Just be mindful when coming up on others and give a holler because you basically come a high-speed MTB trail ninja. Haha.

The sprag clutch mechanism inside provides instant engagement with a gently damped feel instead of the slop or clunk you may be accustomed to with a pawl-style hub. In our view, this makes for an altogether better ride experience across a variety of terrain.

Features:
- Ceramic hybrid bearings
- Patented sprag clutch mechanism
- Instant engagement and disengagement
- Silent operation
- 7075 aluminum alloy hub shell
- Heat treat hardened stainless steel driver
- Labyrinth seal between driver and hub shell
- Adjustable preload for bearings
- Titanium bolts
- Multiple anodization/powder coat color options
- 5-year limited warranty
- Weight: 473g (16.7oz, claimed) for 12x148mm rear hub with XD driver

Aside from a single easy-to-do preload adjustment, our test set has required NO maintenance during three seasons of continued use when paired with an also-impressive set of NOBL Wheels carbon rims.

Onyx recently released their new Vesper hub in a variety of sizes. This uses similar tech inside but has been slimmed down about 60g (2.1oz) in the popular Boost 148 variety. It has 1.5 sprag clutch rows inside, instead of two, and a common axle design for easier and cheaper driver swaps.

Priced in the mid-$400s and up for a rear hub, Onyx makes what many would consider a luxury option. We're believers in the benefits and ride quality of their sprag clutch system, and in our experience things have proven truly worthy in the long run. Here's a big thumbs up from Vital MTB!

Thumbs up for silent hubs! Or do you prefer the noisy variety?

I don't know when loud ass hubs became synonymous with quality (eeeer, yes I do, I blame you, Chris King!), or people wanting to pretend they're on motos, but I'm all for silent freehubs. I'm sad Shimano abandoned their Scylence, but excited to see others catch on. Tire noise and nature is all I want to hear on a ride.

I've always enjoyed quiet hubs. Been on Shimano XTR, Saint hubs and DT Swiss 240s and even used the Shimano silent clutch hubs but those felt too spongy and didn't last long. Saved up for these hubs and they've been pretty bombproof. 3 years later and still no issues.
When I'm out in nature I prefer to listen to the sounds of nature rather than add noise pollution with noisy hubs.

The silence is the icing. The first layer of the cake is the drag-free performance. They are noticeably faster on downhill sections. The rest of the cake is the instant engagement. Unbelievably nice on technical climbs while ratcheting those pedals. I rode these for three years. Bought a new Evil Offering in June and HATE the noisy hubs. My Onyx/We Are One Unions arrive today! I've never met anyone who went back to draggy chainsaw hubs after riding Onyx.

That is super nice! Glad to see effort put into making the hubs silent rather than loud like most of the other popular hubs. It seems that loud hubs are something of a source of pride among MTB riders. They brag about it often too.

Case for loud hubs: multi-use trails.

Edit: So I guess bells exist. Also, I should learn how to whistle.

Love the silence (so over the obnoxious buzzing hubs), quick engage and free spinning. Beautiful! Gotta cost!

I LOVE this! I wish road bikes had silent hubs. Roadies seem to be into super loud hubs.

Just installed the newer Vespyr on my Ripmo build. Best hubs ever! Let's me listen to how my bike is behaving, instant pedal engagement, and zero drag. When im coasting a fire road my bike accelerates like mad compared to my buddies with other hubs. Love it!

I got one of these years ago. It's called a cheap old shimano free hub.

One huge difference I discovered with Onyx hubs compared to the I9 torch is how much easier the onyx is on the body. last year when I put an onyx on my yeti SB130 it made me realized how much the consistent buzzing vibrations was coming through the bike frame to the body. After many a 30+ mile ride I am way less beat with the lack of vibration compared to my I9 hubs.

I have these hubs on 2 bikes and I love them. Sure they weight a bit more, but I absolutely love the zen of silent hups. Just me, the wind, and tires shredding the ground.

And the instant engagement is addictive. Hard to go back to traditional hubs after. Feels like they are broken or something.

I'm a big fan of Onyx.

I fully appreciate the concept of silent hubs on a singletrack; however, where I live, pedestrians on cyclepaths tend to ignore or be aggressive towards to the legal signal of ringing the bell - a backpedal with loud hub works much better: scared/confused/surprised, stepping aside right away :D

I miss this dude in Vital. The dude’s a perfectionist

Been running these hubs for 2 years. The silent running is only the second best part.... the instant torque is a game changer. Oh, and the total lack of maintenance required, despite going through 2 freewheels (225 lbs and poorly coordinated riding eats parts)

They're great on a BMX track because no one can hear you coming up from behind.
