Team grease here. Quieter the better and for whatever reason, I believe it will improve the longevity. Maybe it’s because it’s thicker and with load and heat it seems like it would provide more lubricity or maybe because it would keep water out better. Not sure, but I also like it quieter. Thanks for the video. I found it interesting.

I got the oil version. I don’t need a bell to warn people that the screaming banshee is coming their way.

grease is not good it makes the pulls stick most of the time so they don’t engage proper and can sometimes cause the hub to skip. Hub oil all the way 😂

I had got the reserve 30 with i9 hydra hubs and replaced the Abec bearings with ceramic bearings and definitely made a difference and that’s with stock grease definitely want to try the oil thanks for the time of posting this video!

I have a set of Enduro 305s with the hydra hubs on order. Probably still 2-3months out but slightly concerned with how the drag of the I9s will feel on trail compared to my stock DTswiss M1700 wheels. Did the spin test as you did and they went a full 30 seconds longer at 1:35

That's interesting. I wanted to quiet my I-9 Torch, because when I coast, the noise is picked up by my Go Pro. I used Shimano Dura Ace grease, and it's substantially quieter, and the grease will slow down wear, but in terms of resistance to spinning, the grease looks to offer the most resistance. Hey, but that's okay! Thanks for the video.

I don't have that branded oil, I just use the top1 grease high temp the color blue 🔵 one for my monster gravel...

I’ve used Dumond Tech chain oil but never messed hub oil. My Hadley hubs use zero weight grease but I’m not sure what my Hope hubs or White Industry hubs use. My only concern with using oil in the free hub would be that it would need to be monitored to make sure it doesn’t dry out.

Wiping some of the grease off with a rag does not constitute “dry” in my book. I know this was just for fun but I don’t think you can learn much by an experiment like this. Still it was fun and I enjoyed watching.

I preferred to put grease for the best sound also

What color is the stock grease? I just bought a bike sith hydras and it had a greenish grease in it. I want to make sure I am not ruining a expensive hub by using the wrong grease.

I have already added dumonde tech freehub oil on mine and still is very quiet.

I just oiled my Hydra hub after taking all the factory grease out. And it became TOTALLY SILENT. I am not sure what the hell, but it is completely silent now, I am actually worried ...

Can you please do a spin test with the axle torqued to spec vs axle loose (<10 in/lb) with the chain off? I have three sets (2 brand new off the box and 1 used at 500 miles). The Hydra spins a lot less with the axle torqued to spec, 90-120 in/lb but honestly it starts binding at 30 in/lb on all three sets! I sent one to i9, they gave me new hub and its the same exact thing, binding. So it went back to them. Still waiting to see if they have a fix for it. Please note that the chain is off so the freehub spins with the wheel.

My DT350/240 and Onyx Vesper spins the same duration with the axle torqued to spec or loose.

Hydra spins 50 seconds with chain off, loose axle. Axle torqued to spec. It only spins 8-16 seconds and it gets worse as they wear out.

Thanks!

I want to do this, add oil. So I remove all grease from the inside race and add just a few dabs of oil to the paws, that's it? How often should I re oil?

jimjigga

So ylu did not remove the grease on the pawls? You only remove on the ring and added oil on it right?

I want mine to be more quiet...LOL. I suppose you can't make them permanently quiet?

Does this dumonde tech oil will work to other brands of hubs like koozer hubs? Performance wise? Will increase the sounds a lilttle bit? Thanks for your response
