Excellent method. Unfortunately i dont have a smoke machine. The cheap method that I use is an insence stick. Put it next to the gasket in question with the unit running and look for the smoke to rise steady or be blown by the leak.

I used my vape to figure out if my triumph street triple exhaust had any leaks, sure enough my middle cylinder has a small leak and was the cause of all my noise.

My instructors taught us how to use machines or how to test for certain things but unfortunately it wasn't like how Shane Conley does things, step 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 type of things. it was like sometimes just describe how to do it and then go to hands on and barely get the right concept of how to do it and we're literally scratching our heads and can't understand lol. Its just not too in depth. Especially when tons of student do the same thing, you do great work at teaching students Shane, I can see you care about the next generation of mechanics/techs. My instructor once taught me that our generation, or mine which refer to students like the ones you teach right now as... Sorry to say this but literally were taught nothing all their lives, no foundation at any "Father" career type skills and literally smoking vape, talking about modding lawnmowers and instructor tells us "my generation is pretty jacked up" and instructors that take time out of their lives to teach us, I'd say "Shitheads" really make me happy that there are those that gives a rat a** :) Some instructors can be literally retired, i knew couple that were getting around there and still bothered to teach us. Theres one thats 70s at the moment and was teaching us HVAC, nice guy without a doubt and can get mean if caught goofing around on their chair and could cause a elderly instructor to injure themselves. Also, some instructors are in their 30s-last 40s and they could be making $ with their knowledge but prefer to teach and make less than half of what they made out there teching.
Thank you Shane and those out there literally doing this for us. Can't really understand much how i can help you guys out without doing something that can imo hurt myself in the long run, whether thats $ or trying to reinvent teaching methods. Thats from what i believe, so what i believe the best thing to do is to teach those that are lost as well or families that liked to learn or friends and pass the knowledge on. Instructors from my school informed us they are not teachers because they do not have teaching degrees or certifications but they have a sign outside of one of their classes that says "teaching is the profession that teach others?" i believe... I can't remember how it goes. Again thanks Shane.

Noisy valves are a good thing when you have shim under bucket tight valves are bad. I don't know what kind of valves he has on this bike but I like some noise

So I’ve snapped 2 manifold studs. On different pipes. Is it safe enough to drive to the mechanics

Hey man I'm thinking of getting a 1984 Honda goldwing its leaking water out of the exhaust has smoke when leaking water but when the radiators empty it dosent smoke. Think it's a blown head gasket

Should I worry if air is leaking from weep hole that is meant for water to come out?

Would the exhaust gasket need to be replaced ? My exhaust sounds like it’s going to blow up pushing full throttle and sounds like it’s sputtering backfiring after I let the throttle off. Front header pipes turning blue. It won’t accelerate past 60mph and bogs down, I’m guessing it maybe an exhaust gasket leak in the front?

Could a blown exaushet gasket be the symptoms to very hot to touch head exaushet after 10 mins of idling. I do av white smoke rising from the exaushet exit on the head. It doesn't change with revs it stays the same

I have just bought a 1991 VFR750 from a dealer that has a loudish ticking sound when running.. It’s immaculate, totally standard with only 14k miles.. The valves have been checked, all perfect.

(The bike hasn’t been delivered yet. I’m waiting on whether this noise can be found and rectified before I pull the pin!)

The dealer has ordered a clutch slave cylinder seal kit, so I’m waiting to see if it’s any better.. BUT, I am wondering if it has an exhaust leak at one of the headers, as some videos I have looked at sound similar?

If it’s not that, I am out of ideas.. 💁🏻‍♂️

Anyone with knowledge, gratefully received 🤙🏽

i turned my boke off and heard ticking for about 15-20 seconds. if this a sign of exhaust leak? its a single cylinder 250cc motor.

Interesting, but on my bike it’d be far quicker to just fit new header gaskets. It takes an eternity to remove the tank, airbox and spark plugs (thank god the plugs only need replacing every 30, 000km, it’s a 90 minute job just to get to them)

Shane I swear you're soooo knowledgeable! You are inspirational! Do you have material for sale or is it property of the School?

Just curious why you state you guys are "cheating" with this method? Thanks for the tips anyhow.

Would an exhaust leak at the cylinder on a 2 Stroke make it sound like piston slap?

it's a great idea but can I borrow your smoke machine cuz where do I get one of those to test and see if mine is leaking

Wait, how do you make sure the valves are closed? I couldn't hear what he said.
