Is the Kraken real? Colossal squid and giant squids may be the explanation of old sea monsters that used to attack sailors. Vertical migration may be an explanation for why this doesn't happen in the modern day.

i’ve heard it’s unlikely they would attack ships because most squids are incredibly shy and terrified of humans what I personally think is going on is they came up to the surface looking for prey, and they must stuck the ships as some sort of large whale or something surfacing

They also normally fight whales like mortal enemies and would explain why ships were attacked, since the underside would look similar to a whale
