The R7 checks a lot of boxes, but falls short in the color reproduction dept.

I have a 90D which I use with the longer lenses (the Tam 100-400 struggled with AF on a fast moving target, and when I moved on to the Canon 100-400, that ‘old’ camera never felt more efficient. ) I also realized a DSLR isn’t as bad as a mirrorless when you consider battery life. So I stick with the old APS-C DSLR for that, and the R6 is my full frame photography camera, like with my 35mm, what’s in the frame is my picture (mostly).
I thought the R6 would make better use of the Tamron with its AF, but it was the opposite. The lens’ AF became temperamental as the light was lowering, froze repeatedly. That’s what sealed its fate. The Canon lens just deals with whatever it points at.
I do underuse the video capabilities on both these marvellous devices, I must say. That’s one reason I think the R5 is overkill for me, btw.
The RP was the bridge to the RF system obviously, but first and foremost to be able to use my wide angles to their fullest. And then, also to use on a Canon some old FD and Nikkor glass. Love its compact form factor, I thought I would use it for some street photography, but its AF is not that of the R6 - same for the EVF (it starts to matter more as one gets older, I find).

I believe the R6’s auto focus is rated reliable down to -7 EV. While the R7’s autofocus is rated down to a -5 EV. So we can assume in low light the R6 auto focus should be superior. Also these figures are lens dependent so it’s understandable that these comparisons can be difficult. I have an R6 and have no complaints, but I still ordered an R7 for when I needed the additional reach. I fully understand the R’7’s shortcomings and will not put in a position of failure. The R6 will remain my primary camera.

M50 or upgrade to R7 for product photography?

What are your thoughts if someone was looking at the R7 in place of the base EOS R?

Thank you for this review. I will be shooting sports. My EOS R is limited in the FPS and autofocus. I was considering the R7 but worried about the dynamic range and noise as I might be shooting some night stadium lit high school football games. I was tempted by the Crop as I have the 7D II. I think my clear choice is the R6 as well.

The 1.6 crop factor advantage is a big deal especially when used with a sharp lens. That is the main reason for adding an r7 to one’s kit.

I have both the R6 and R7. Perhaps you need a real lens like the Canon RF 100-500. I'll take the reach for wildlife any day. Maybe even add an RF 1.4 TX. My R6, though the best their is for high ISO situations, just doesn't have the megapixels to crop for reach. For kicks, I tried shooting motocross jumps the other day with R7 and RF 70-200. 1/3200 shutter and the mid range shutter. You don't need 30fps and rolling effects. I got crystal clear motorcycles at their high speed my first time out. Birds are good practice. What I'm trying to contribute is your logic is sorta logical but it ain't the same as spending the $1500 to go holy holy, now I get it. Anyway, thanks for the input, it was fun to hear and I understand where you're coming from because I too agonized for months before I took the leap.

Hey bro! Great video. Owning an R3 I can tell you that the auto focus is NOT the same! It's good and it tracks similarly, but its definitely NOT the same! I think the AF will get better with firmware updates, but as of now its not as reliable as that of R3, R5, or R6.

Very accurate information, well done.

The difference is price, with which you can buy a lens. The R3 is better then the R6.

Took my R7 kit back. The junk buffer and iso over 4000 is garbage the old Nikon d7500 has better iso range. If you are looking get an R6 instead.

The R6 isn't a wildlife camera, it is a video camera... The R5 is much better... The electronic shutter is over-rated. All you electronic shutter lovers should just take a video and pull your pictures out of that, it's pretty much the same thing, geez....
