How Does the Canon R7 Handle RF Lenses?

The Canon R7 is a lovely camera, there's no doubt about that, but... what lenses should you use with it? Of course you've got the RF-S lenses which are a great option but what about the full frame RF lenses? How do they perform with the R7 and is that the path to go down? Let's talk about.

Some of the lenses we used with the Canon R7:

My R7 has given my old EF-S 10 - 18 lens a new lease of life.

Coming from the original 7D myself, the R7 is an insane upgrade in all respects. And with the EF adapter there is no immediate need to update lenses either. I'm using the same EF-S 17-55 f2.8 now, which is still one of the best all-round EF-S lenses imo.

In due time I can update my EF glass to RF, but the one thing I'm staying away from is RF-S glass; The 17-55 is great, but I don't ever want to lock into crop bodies again, and getting RF glass now makes transitioning to a full frame body somewhere down the line a very likely option.

In time we should also see some 3rd party RF glass, as Canon can't possibly keep a lid on that for ever.

LOVE LovE, my R7's :) Sold my R5 to buy the second one. No regrets. But then I shoot mostly small, perched birds where reach is most important, and I still need to crop often. The R7 puts more pixels on my bird, than ANY other camera, crop or FF, from ANY company. For a FF body in crop mode, to put as many pixels on the subject as my R7's, it will have to be a bit over 80 mp, just to match it.
On the other hand, if I were one of you "normal" photographers ;) .... shooting a lot of different stuff, I'd probably go with the R6 Mk II. Or, if money is not such an object, I might wait for the R5 Mk II. I think those cameras are just more well rounded. My R7's on the other hand, are very specialized, and do exactly what I need them to do for me.

Great video! Thanks for providing options for RF lens uses including the next step I’m planning on doing (adding an R5 to my bag). I love my R7 for action shots and video (most recently at an F1 race), and have been expanding my lens selection with the EF-RF Meike adapter with the VND filter. The RF 24-105 f2.8 is my next target, and should be good to use on both the bodies, but for different purposes. Thanks again!

I bought a R7 for my sons sports when it first came out and it has not disappointed, with good glass I get shots that I was missing on my former DSLR. The body felt a little small at first, and although a lot of people questioned the oddity of the rear wheel location, the ergonomics of the wheel location is fantastic. It's unfortunate that it's not integrated into other canon bodies. As sensors and AF improve, I hope Canon will see fit to update to the R7 mark II much sooner than they did with the 7D/7D mark II (but make sure not to move the rear wheel, lol)!

I use the R7 as the second camera to R5. I love the fact that they used the same battery. I also have an RF-S 18-150 when I go for travel and need lightweight.

The R7's sensor is 30mp plus the pixels are large. This gives another great advantage. If the reach didn't get you close enough, the larger pixels allow you to crop your photo quite a bit more.

Good God! What a breath of fresh air to see a sensible view of what the R7 is. Thank you for not looking at the R7 as an entry level on the way to FF!
I am working towards saving up for the RF 100-300 2.8 for my R7. With some TC’s that should make an awesome wildlife/bird setup. In the meantime, I use it with my existing EF lenses- 400mm, 600mm : all good

I'm seriously considering the R7 to add to my old R. It's only about three times the cost of a teleconverter!!

Why do you lay the lenses on tables without the caps? Is it "fancy"?

Did you notice lack of sharpness with RF lenses on crop cameras? Thanks!

In my opinion the Canon R7 replaces the Canon 80D and Canon 90D and Canon 7D Mark ii and the other 33mp Canon Mirroless camera released when the Canon 90D was released.

Plus the Canon R7 has two SD card slots and unlimited recording time limit

No matter which lens RF-S or RF EF or EF-S you will always need to apply the crop factor. Not JUST on full frame lenses.

I have the R7, looking to add the RF100 macro 2.8 will this be a possibility?

You still have to think about focal length with rfs lenses….crop factor still applies.
