The art journey is a long one. I think an arstyle is usually formed from many factors: Your influences, your experiences, your personal tastes, and all the little tricks you've gathered over the years. It is not a bad thing to want our art to look like the people we look up to, but it certainly is important to try to give it its own identity. Go beyond that. Do not just settle for "Oh, I want it to look like X person's" Try to improve upon it and gather bits from other artists you also enjoy

As someone who is still developing a certain style this video surely boosted my confidence. Thank you for this video

Also if you're a beginner don't be afraid of seeing any changes into your style because its bound to happen to matter what, seeing those changes means you're improving, developing, and enhancing your own creative style. If you start thinking that your artstyle is getting "worst/bad" don't be afraid to ask someone you know to criticize your own work and integrate what you learned from them and improve upon it. One more thing, don't focus too much on artstyle and always balance things out. Also don't forget the most important part which is have fun and always take a break every now and then.

Naoki Saito has an interesting video on the philosophy of the anime art style, in the format of a correction and paint over video specifically of a western fan’s art. I gleaned around 2-3 things about that video that concisely make the anime art style design philosophy tangible:

1. Less is more. Academic/ realistic style matters very little when making those type of illustrations. Fundamentals are important, but it was more of a bare bones foundation than I thought.

2. focus on your favorite parts of the process. He talks specifically about drawing the bits you like in a way that shows your love for those bits. An Example in his video being lips or boobs drawn in a way that emphasize their softness or form. I personally think it can extend to color or lineart or sketching, and I can see that in some of the drawings displayed in this video.

3. Follow and understand the style trends that exist in Japan. So if an anime style is swinging a certain way, it’s best to also swing in that direction.

There’s a fourth thing too that was more of a technical tip to drawing eyes and it was drawing them flat? Like thinking of them like stickers on the face instead of how they’re thought about in realism and academic drawing.

I Agree, and also I wish beginner artist to stop saying "Oh my art style is always changing" That just means youre not consistent or you dont have an art style, you are merely getting inspired by your idols to make art that looks like theirs, you will develop a bad habit of just copying an art style and passing it off as your own if you keep saying that your art style is "always changing".

an Art Style is YOUR ART's culmination of consistency and practice.

I always find it hard to develop my own artstyle because when I draw I sometimes see that I always take 2 steps forward and 1 step behind, I know I have a bit of a learning disability, but I’ve been improving on my artwork in traditional sketches too

You broke this down really well! I’ve been having trouble figuring out the overall mood I’m trying to convey with my art and deciding which brushes, coloring, and shading to use. So this video helped a lot

Honestly what makes me happy is drawing elaborate clothing. I love rendering folds and lacey patterns. But when it comes to a background...I blank.

0:51 Damn near identical certainly, but if you've seen the shows independently/seen a video about the show, you can easily spot the differences and differentiate the characters... atleast, I know I could.

2:11, I think we recognize them because we recognize the pieces, not that we recognized the artist. if all the artists in the comparison drew the same picture in their style, then we would truly be tested in recognized an artist by their style, and not just by recognized a previous work of theirs.

My crisis is that I like the anime art style - I think it's very pretty and draw characters in that style, but I don't watch anime or enjoy it. I just use the style to draw Western characters and fantasy characters like elves and demons. Everyone is like 'What anime are you inspired by' and I'm like 'Uhhh, none'.

Hmm... 5:42, I guess I should copy Mr. Fujimoto's Makima eyes since I have a character I want to have those "target boards" since he's supposed to have multicolored eyes that look layered.
