Myth: Changing your surname after marriage is necessary.

Fact: There is no legal requirement to change your surname after marriage. It is a personal choice.

Why I didn't change my surname:

-I don't want to go through the hassle of changing my name on all my documents.

-I want to keep my maiden name as a part of my identity.

-I don't believe that changing my surname will make me any more or less married.

What about inheritance?

There is a common myth that you can only inherit property from your spouse if you share their surname. This is not true. You can inherit property from anyone, regardless of your surname.

What about my children?

There is no need to worry about your children having different
surnames from you or your spouse. Children can have either parent's surname, or a hyphenated surname.

The decision of whether or not to change your surname after marriage is a personal one. There is no right or wrong answer. Do what feels right for you.

Changing of the surname across a number of documents should have been so streamlined since it is needed by millions upon marriage. Although, I am not suggesting that women must change their surname upon marriage. What I am trying to say is that women who want to change their surname upon marriage should only have to get the marriage certificate and systems should be linked across departments of the government that should automatically update.

I being a man never asked my wife to change her surname. She respects for that and compliments me in front of others. I like it but, behind I know how many hassels I would have to go through. As a husband I will only have to get the processes done to get her name changedso I dint do it. Just keep life less complex and continue enjoying.😊

You keep your daddy’s name because divorces can happen, but daddy’s name is forever. ❤

My parents used to live in village in 1992 when they got married and mom never changed her surname( later she joined govt. sector in 2004). This mindset during that period in Indian village was progressive. However I faced some bully during early childhood in school but now that I am working, my higher officials are highly impressed by the fact that both my parents have different surname maintaining their individuality.

That's why we thank Guru Gobind Singh Ji for establishing khalsa panth (clan). He made sikhs into singh and kaur thus rendering surnames useless. Naa rahega baans, naa bajegi baansuri. 😂

Just get your marriage registered didi and no need to change surname. Else apne name ke chakkar main yeh prove karna mushkil ho jayega ki you are Mrs Bhati and you will lose some benefits due to that

My parents gave me the name and surname. I have been married for over a decade never considered changing it. My husband does taunt me here and there about it but I don’t care. He would t change his so why should I change mine.

My mother never changed her surname. She was married at 27 and now I'm 20. I've always addressed my mother's name proudly even after getting weird glances from people. And now I'm glad I got such a woman with so much self respect as my mother

Thanking for saying this out loud. I am also not in favor of changing names. It is just a lot of unnecessary paperwork.
